Mr Jordaan Hotel — Attraction in Amsterdam

So, this hotel is charming, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the location is great. Why then, you ask, did you give it an overall 3 stars?

The rooms are small. I mean, we knew they would be, and we really could have overlooked how small they were except they are not well thought out. If you are 5' tall then I'm sure they are fine for you. I am not. At 6'1", I had serious difficulty using the bathroom and the sink. See the photos for the beam that blocks the sink, making it a contortionist act to brush your teeth. Add to the fact that the heat doesn't reach the bathroom (and it never got warmer than 35°F for our stay) and the bathroom is a nightmare. Essentially the bathroom sink is sort of shares space with the shower, so the floor is wet and freezing most of the time.

Then there are the beds. We tried to find a way to make them work, but it was impossible for us. These are the most uncomfortable beds we have ever slept in. They sloped on either side and constantly tried to dump you on the floor or into the crack between the two twins they put together. They were both uncomfortably firm and boucy at the same time. My feet hung off the end, and the firmness caused pressure points that had us waking hourly with numb arms and sore backs. This was the thing we could not overlook, and after trying our best to somehow make it work, we threw in the towel and gave up.

To their credit, the friendly staff went out of their way to try and make things better the whole time, including putting some sort of pad on the bed for the wife to make it softer (which sadly didn't help, but they tried), and when we decided to cut our 6 day stay short on day 3, they gladly refunded the remaining balance (which we had paid in advance) which allowed us to find alternative accomodations.

Just know, fellow traveller, that the wonderful Instagram photos of this place, while charming, are not 100% truthful of it's diminutive size, especially if you are tall/big. Big & tall people like myself will likely not be very comfortable here. And trust me, we...

This boutique hotel looks cute for its design, but their business practices are dishonest! I felt uncomfortable with how they treated customers. First, the room I received was not what I had paid for based on the pictures in the app. During my one-night stay, they claimed the hotel was fully booked and offered me a “special arrangement” in a secret annex. I was taken aback and suspected it was staff accommodations since I accessed my room through a different door that had a sign.When I inquired further, the hostess told me I received an “upgrade” to a canal view room because they were full. However, this room was tiny and the heating didn’t work at all. That night was freezing, and when I asked if the AC could help regulate the temperature, I learned it was only functional in summer. They didn’t have any portable heaters available either. I was shocked that the heating system was inadequate, especially in Amsterdam during the snow.The hostess later offered to switch me to another “staff” room, which I switched later, but it was still cold, and I had to sleep in my down jacket. If your hotel is fully booked, don’t allow overbooking on platforms and provide customers with staff accommodations; that’s not acceptable business practice!!!While the hostess was polite and they did give me a bag of snacks upon checkout, the fundamental purpose of staying in a hotel is to have a comfortable experience, which this stay did not provide. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Additionally, the hotel is overpriced, charging a premium for a small room that simply isn’t worth it. From the moment we arrived at this location on a quiet canal in the beautiful Jordaan neighborhood, we felt at home. Although we arrived early in the morning, staff were happy to store our luggage and offered coffee and water before we set out for the day. We especially appreciated the availability of coffee at all hours, as well as afternoon pastries.||Our room was a triple, and although it was very small (particularly the bathroom -- you might have trouble showering if you're especially tall or wide!), it was cozy and comfortable. The beds were extremely comfortable, and the room was equipped with a freestanding rack with hangers that helped keep our things organized. Plus refillable plastic water bottles that were really helpful (Amsterdam is full of bottle fillers everywhere you look; we never bought a bottle of water on our trip).||Breakfast is available at a (reasonable) additional cost, and we took it every day we stayed. Breads (and adorable boxes of hagelslag, of course), meat and cheese, fruit, pastries, yogurt, eggs, and cereal were all of good quality and sufficient quantity to fuel us for the day. We never left hungry and our picky 11-year-old loved the croissants.||The location is unbeatable -- less than a 10 minute walk from useful tram stops, just a few steps from the Westerkerk and Anne Frank House, and even walkable from Amsterdam Centraal (25 minutes or so, although I don't recommend it with rolling luggage). We were able to access the best of the city without any trouble while still remaining somewhat apart from the hustle and bustle of more central areas.||I can recommend Mr Jordaan without hesitation for anyone who wants to enjoy all that Amsterdam...
