Upset, shocked, and disappointed that my family and I were turned away at the door while coming to pray for Shabbat and Hannukah.

While some synagogues do have a “no shorts” policy - this is usually out of respect. I have never seen a synagogue actually turn away a Jew that wants to pray with loved ones for the Holiday (yelled at to leave, in particular!)

We traveled across the Island to come to this synagogue and could not feasibly change clothes and return. Because of this my family and I were denied our holy sabbath and Hanukkah all in one.

My Rabbi was disgusted after hearing this. No Jew should be turned down an opportunity to prayer during the high holidays. Long pants or not connecting to religion should not be denied for any reason.

I believe in Karma - and...

Have wanted to visit for a long time. This house of prayer is substantial. Because I’d heard it has a sand floor, I thought it might be indoor/outdoor like a beachside cafe. Not the case at all. The sturdy historic building has a colonial feel and is similar to a church design. Dark wood pews, elaborate candelabras, pipe organ. I wanted it to be more like the shifting shuls of the desert when the Jews wandered for 40 years. Instead it is smack in the center of commerce and literally central in Willemstad. It is a walled compound. Protected feeling. Not possible to go to the balcony where I would have been forced to go in the synagogue’s heyday. There’s a cool mikveh excavated in one of the courtyards. The history of the Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, the oldest surviving synagogue in the Western Hemisphere, invites visitors to think about what it must have been like to resettle in a distant land where a sand-floor synagogue would be part of the new way of life. A comprehensive timeline posted outside the museum includes the arrival of Jews in Curaçao almost four centuries ago fleeing persecution from Crusader pogroms. It begins with information about an Arawakan language people group Indigenous to Venezuela populating Curaçao as early as 500 BC. Progressing through various struggles for freedom, and Curaçao's history as it relates to the larger world.

The Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue in Curaçao is the oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere in downtown Willemstad. You can visit the synagogue and the museum on the premisses. Visit the synanagogue during the week. Entrance fee for the museum is 10 dollars. The visit is worth your while. Especially during Jewish Holidays. Make sure you check on the dresscode. Example is no slippers/flipflops allowed. Check dresscode also when visiting the island on a cruiseship. It is a 20 minute walk from the cruiseship to the synagogue.
