Surely one of the most beautiful gates in all b of Western Europe. This is South Holland Picturesque at its very finest. Not to be missed if you're a fan of architectural heritage, nor if you're an admirer of beauty in the broadest terms.
Originally there were gates at every corner of Delft but only the Oostport (Eastern Gate) survives. One can also see extensions to the bridge and land around it in the Dutch fashions of each century since the original construction, including a 19th Century drawbridge.
From the gate itself one stands at a viewpoint overlooking the magnificent River Vliet making a grand meander as it throws itself around the South East extremity of Old Delft. The nearby rowing club, as well as the Vliet's continued use as a transport way between Den Haag and Rotterdam, ensure that this view is never dull. Read moreThe Oosterpoort is the one remaining gate of the old city wall of Delft. The building itself has been left unaltered and is currently used as housing for artists.
Behind the gate you can still find one of the old inns. Hunters, traders and travelers would rest here before traveling onwards.
If you want to make nice pictures of the gate, the sitting platform on the other side of the water is a good place. It offers a great view of the building and the drawing bridge.
When the weather is nice, expect a lot of people sitting at the platform and fishers sitting around...
Read moreVisiting the East Wall is quite an experience, especially if you have read about the history of the Berlin wall and its fall. This is the last remaining part of the wall and its a stretch that you can walk next and admire graffiti from wonderful artists. The drawings range from the powerful and emotional to the whimsical. I really enjoyed the walk and found myself standing often to admire parts of the wall and the messages they carry.
It's a great reminder of how're we as humans are capable of finding beauty after overcoming...
