I arrived thinking I had a reservation, but jet-lagged, I had booked for two days later. They kindly seated me anyway, which I appreciated. The restaurant was extremely busy at around 6:45pm, and although my server was exceptional, the dining experience overall was one of the most ordinary. I ordered the snail appetizer and the venison (deer) dish. The snails were good and the salad was delicious, especially the house made pickled (radish?). That dish came at 6:54 (I'd taken a photo) and main course didn't come until 7:35. When it did come, the deer was tough and way overcooked. I couldn't eat it all, and hate wasting food. The mixed veggie plate that accompanies is good, but was more "man behind the curtain Wizard of Oz style" than anything earth-shattering. Looks without pizazz. The house made genever was amazing, the best part of the dish. In the end, the server was apologetic and offered to make it right, so I said I could try a dessert. To note: As a professionally trained chef, I have worked in kitchens, I know it is HARD, stressful, intense work, and you have to get it right EVERY time. I don't give this review lightly. I ordered the gingerbread ice cream cake, and it was nice, but once again, flavor was lacking-- in addition, there was a cube of icy frozen cream/sugar that hadn't somehow been mixed in to the ice cream part of the cake.
Overall, I don't understand what all the hoopla is about this place. While the server was exceptional and kind and sincere, I've made better food on a camp stove. It took two hours for 3 dishes to come out. They over seated their dining space in an effort to accommodate, and it bit them in the arse.
Maybe I was here on an "off night", but the flavors just weren't there. I'd read about this place in Rick Steve's as well as Google Maps, and this goes down as a huge disappointment. Hope they can turn this ship around, or perhaps the people dining here like...
Read moreSuperb atmosphere, great tasting food, lovely service and right in the heart of the town! Could not pick a better restaurant for a dinner with a loved one in Delft if we tried! My wife and I did not have a reservation, however we were given a table within 10 minutes of walking in on Holy Saturday this year (19-04-2025). As you can see from the photos attached, the plating was next to none (Delft blue was clearly at the forefront) and the food was so appetising to eat! My wife ordered the De Zucchini and was extremely pleased with her choice, as the meal was clearly created with the vegetarian palette in mind (rather than, like in some other establishments, where the vegetarian option is the same as the carnivore one minus the meat). The bill was presented in a very sweet way too - Delft blue pottery clog for the win! The toilets are on the ground floor, which is good as you dont have to climb stairs to go and wash your hands. The tables are quite closely spaced together, but that did not bother us. However it would be challenging to navigate with a stroller and/or a wheelchair. The ambiance is typically Dutch, including a tulip vase with real tulips (at the entrance to the restaurant). Both my with and I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant to anyone and everyone! You'll enjoy your time at Spijshuis De Dis...
Read moreVery mediocre restaurant with high prices. The menu has variety, wine list more than adequate, and the staff friendly. But the food itself is very mediocre. The mains are all accompanied by below average sides (everyone gets the same thing). It looked as if all the plates are prearranged with these accompaniments, which actually tasted as if they'd been sitting around for hours. The sides we're absolutely underwhelming and confusing. Many in our group received the main dish on a separate plate altogether, making it appear as if the meal was centered around the sides! The mains tasted okay, nothing to write home about, certainly nothing to pay so much for. At this price, one would expect a refined dining experience with food that is on point and satisfying. This restaurant delivered an uncoordinated menu with needlessly complicated food that emphasizes bells, whistles and gimmicks, over actual cooking. The quality of food here is thoroughly underwhelming compared to the other options in Delft. Would...
