The Hague is a very inviting and cosmopolitan destination. My last day visit was from A'dam was to The Hague. For a one-day outing, I suggest you visit the nearby Food Hallen for high quality Asian street food, and then wonder off to Sticting Design Museum Dedel after a light meal at the food court. The museum's primary mission is to specialise in showcasing and enlightening the general public of graphic design history in the modern era. Advertising in the form of posters, pamphlets, and various other medium to promote goods and services will be showcased here in the periodically changing exhibitions.
While mainstream museums such as New York's Museum of Modern Art, Boston's Museum of Fine Art, or Berlin's Applied Arts Museum will have exhibitions with a section on graphic design, but the subject matter often gets lost in the shuffle by displaying it together with so many other forms of art. It is refreshing to see a formation of specialty graphic design museums such as Stichting Design Museum Dedel fill the void by creating a Mecca for displaying and documenting the very important media of graphic art and advertising. The personnel involved in the museum have the resources available to make this museum a very interesting one to visit for many decades to come. The bookshop in the museum is very noteworthy as it offers interesting publications not likely to be found elsewhere. ...
Read moreA small but interesting museum that is a mix of a historical house with unique qualities undergoing renovation, and a poster museum that rotates between various themes.
The house is being restored by a group of volunteers, and simultaneously they have tens of thousands of posters across time and space. They say they hope to rotate through the posters through various themes. Currently it's mostly a Swiss theme. If there's a particular one you're hoping for, you can keep an eye on this place and see what they have planned. I recommend visiting anyway because the volunteers are friendly and happy to answer questions.
The museum visit starts with a guided tour that walks you through the house explaining some of its details and history. And then you are allowed to wander around looking at the posters.
There is also an impressive sculpted wall in...
Read moreThe house itself is a work of art. There is ornate rococo plaster work on the walls and in the staircase. The state of the walls at the second level is poor. The organization hopes to raise funds to restore the interior. The interior has additions from the 17, 18, and 1900s.
On the walls are posters (originals) in Art Deco style. They run the gamut from ships and pleasure cruises to flight and cars from the era. They are from Switzerland, France and The Netherlands.
Trigger warning: soms posters use Black Face.
This is not a museum where the museum card can be used. The place is not accessible for wheelchairs. There is a small shop with basic items available. Your visit can be completed in an hour. One of the volunteers will convey basic history over the year the building was built, when it was updated. Then, you are left...
