Visiting Zaanse Schans was like stepping back in time while still feeling connected to the lively, modern Netherlands. This was easily one of the highlights of our trip, and I can’t recommend it enough if you want to experience the essence of Dutch history and culture in one place.

We started by walking along the river, taking in the view of the windmills lined up along the water. It’s hard to describe just how picturesque it is — the reflections on the river, the smell of wood smoke in the air, and the sound of the sails slowly turning in the wind. It’s straight out of a painting, especially in the early morning light before the crowds arrive. Bring a camera because every step has a new photo opportunity.

We stopped by the Zaan Museum, which gave us a fascinating look at the history of the area, from the windmills to the thriving industries that made this region famous. It really helped us appreciate everything we were seeing outside and gave context to the whole experience.

One of my favorite unexpected moments was taking the little foot ferry across the river. It’s run by a lovely couple who volunteer their time just to keep this small piece of tradition alive. They were incredibly kind, and it was such a wholesome, local touch that made the day even more special. It felt like we were stepping into a part of everyday Dutch life rather than just a tourist activity.

Of course, we had to warm up with some Dutch hot chocolate, which was rich, creamy, and absolutely perfect on a breezy September day. It’s worth stopping to savor a cup while watching the windmills turn across the water.

We also went inside one of the working windmills, which was a truly unique experience. Seeing the massive gears and wooden beams in motion gave me a whole new appreciation for the engineering and history behind these iconic structures. Afterward, we followed the Home Trail, a charming walk through old-style Dutch houses that really felt like stepping back centuries.

The wooden shoe-making demonstration was surprisingly fun and interactive. Watching the craftsmanship up close made me appreciate the work behind something I’d only ever seen as a souvenir before. And yes — you get to try on a pair!

We finished our visit by sampling Dutch cheeses at one of the local shops. The staff were incredibly friendly and explained each type of cheese while letting us taste as much as we wanted. The smoked cheese was my favorite, and of course, we couldn’t leave without buying some...

I recently visited the Zaansche Mill, and I have to say—this place is absolutely incredible! The green windmills, the charming houses, and the whole atmosphere feel like stepping into a fairytale. Everything is so picturesque and enchanting, making it a perfect spot for a day trip.

This year, they’re celebrating their 100th anniversary, which makes the visit even more special. However, I was a bit disappointed that the Museum Card no longer works for entering the windmills. Last year, it was accepted, so it’s a shame that they changed it. That said, the entrance to the area itself is free, and you only need to pay if you want to go inside the windmills.

A small tip: If you need to use the toilets, bring your card, because they don’t accept cash, and it costs €1 per use.

One of my favorite things here is the cheese shop. They have a huge variety of cheeses, and it’s a great place to buy some delicious local specialties to take home.
