Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park is a true Auckland treasure, offering a serene blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and breathtaking views that make it an absolute must-visit for anyone in the area. My visit to this park was both peaceful and inspiring, and it’s a place I’d highly recommend to locals and visitors alike.

Located on a hill overlooking the Waitematā Harbour and Rangitoto Island, the park offers some of the most stunning panoramic views in all of Auckland. As soon as you arrive, the sense of tranquility and connection with nature is palpable. The park is beautifully maintained, with lush gardens, neatly trimmed lawns, and vibrant flower beds that create a picturesque setting perfect for a relaxing stroll or a quiet moment of reflection.

The centerpiece of the park is the memorial to Michael Joseph Savage, one of New Zealand’s most respected Prime Ministers, known for his significant contributions to the country’s social welfare system. The memorial itself is a striking Art Deco structure surrounded by a reflective pool and meticulously manicured gardens. The design is both elegant and solemn, perfectly honoring the legacy of a leader who played such a pivotal role in shaping modern New Zealand.

What makes this park even more special is its peaceful ambiance. Despite its popularity, it never feels overcrowded, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings and the historical significance of the site. The tranquility of the park is complemented by the soft sounds of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves, making it an ideal spot to unwind and take in the beauty around you.

One of the highlights of my visit was simply sitting on one of the many benches scattered throughout the park, taking in the sweeping views of the harbor and the city skyline. Whether you’re visiting on a clear, sunny day or during a more overcast time, the vistas are always breathtaking. The park also offers plenty of open spaces, making it a great place for a picnic or just to relax on the grass with a book.

The pathways throughout the park are well-paved and accessible, making it easy for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy. There’s also ample parking nearby, which adds to the convenience of visiting. For those interested in photography, this park offers endless opportunities to capture the natural beauty of Auckland, especially during sunrise or sunset when the light casts a magical glow over the landscape.

What I found particularly moving was the sense of history that permeates the park. The memorial not only honors Michael Joseph Savage but also serves as a reminder of New Zealand’s rich political and social history. It’s a place where you can truly appreciate the legacy of a leader who had a profound impact on the nation.

In summary, Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park is a place of peace, beauty, and historical significance. It’s a spot that invites you to pause, reflect, and appreciate both the natural world and the important figures in New Zealand’s history. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a quiet place to relax, this park is sure to leave a lasting impression. I can’t recommend it highly enough and look forward to returning on my next visit...

This Monument was erected by The New Zealand Labour Party in memory of Michael Joseph Savage, First Labour Prime Minister of New Zealand. There is no fame to rise above the Crowning Honour of a people's love

Situated off Tamaki Drive near Mission Bay, The Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park is set amongst 49 hectares of land with impressive panoramic views overlooking Waitemata harbour and Rangitoto Island.

The tall obelisk, sunken pool and landscaped gardens is a memorial to New Zealand's first Labour Prime Minister (1872 - 1940) and also the founder of the Welfare State.

In 1860, 1879 and 1880 Ngati Whatua leaders Tuhaere and Te Kawau assembled many North Island chiefs to the Kohimaramara Conference to establish a Maori Parliament. They sought to redress on land issues and equality under the law. In the 1930's the Maori sought remedy through Michael Savage, the serving Prime Minister of the Labour Government. With Maori support Labour had entered Parliament for the first time, beginning a long-standing relationship.

The park provides visitors with sweeping views of Auckland's city skyline and is a popular spot with coach tours and tourists.

Located at Auckland's Bastion Point, the memorial to Michael Joseph Savage, New Zealand's first Labour prime minister (1935-1940) overlooks the Waitemata Harbour. Like the Massey Memorial in Wellington, it is built on the site of a former gun emplacement dating from the 'Russian Scare' of the 1880s.

Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park is a truly special place, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Auckland and the Waitematā Harbour. My first visit here was astonishing; the memorial itself is a stunning piece of architecture, and the park's serene atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for reflection. The expansive lawns and well-maintained gardens provide a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle.

The park's location is ideal, offering a refreshing contrast to the nearby attractions. It's an excellent choice to visit after spending time at Mission Bay or exploring the marine life. The park's various garden flowers add a splash of color and vibrancy, enhancing the overall beauty of the surroundings. Whether you're looking for a quiet place to relax, a scenic spot for a picnic, or simply a place to enjoy stunning views, Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park is a must-visit destination.

The memorial's historical significance, combined with its natural beauty, creates a truly memorable experience. The park's well-maintained pathways and accessible layout make it easy to explore and enjoy the stunning views. It's a place where you can connect with nature, appreciate the city's beauty, and reflect on the legacy of Michael Joseph Savage. I highly recommend a visit to this...

Located at the Bastion Point of the east Auckland near Mission Bay, Michael Joseph Savage Gardens is a pleasant and relaxing park maintained by the Auckland city council. Designed by local architects Tibor Donner and Anthony Bartlett, Fletcher Construction company finished construction of this park in March of 1942. It was built in memory of former New Zealand Prime Minister Michael Joseph Savage who headed the first Labour government in the 1935 general election. Savage was also involved with the formation of the New Zealand Labour Party in July 1916. He was the 23rd prime minister of New Zealand. The park is located on an elevated ground, therefore provides beautiful views of the Auckland city, Waitemata harbour, Rangitoto island and the Hauraki gulf. It is a popular tourist attraction for both international visitors and locals. The central park area is centred around a large sunken garden, which are adorned with hedges and variety of seasonal flowers. There is a large but shallow pool located in the centre of the garden. The main feature is the obelisk tower, base of which has an epitaph embedded to honour the late Prime Minister. It has good toilet facilities, ample parking spaces and quite a few benches to sit and relax. It is also popular among dog walkers.
