Mission Bay is a popular seaside suburb on the southern shore of Waitematā Harbour, about 7-8 km east of Auckland’s CBD. • The beach is roughly 600 metres of golden/orange-tinged sand, lined with pōhutukawa trees. • There’s a large grassy reserve (Selwyn Reserve) behind the beach.

⸻

Things to Do / Highlights • Swimming & beach time: The waters are relatively calm and the beach is family-friendly. Good for sunbathing, paddling & relaxing. • Beachfront promenade & café/restaurants: Many places to eat, drink, or just sit with views of Rangitoto Island. • Trevor Moss Davis Memorial Fountain: A landmark in the reserve, with jets of water, marble, bronze sea creature decorations; becomes a light show at night. • Playground & green spaces: Good spots for families & kids; shady areas under trees, places to picnic. • Activities: Kayaking / paddleboarding along the bay, walking / jogging along the promenade or Tamaki Drive, exploring nearby Bastion Point / Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park. • Historic / cultural sites: The Melanesian Mission House (Tudor Revival architecture) is in Mission Bay. Bastion Point has historical significance.

⸻

Getting There & Facilities • By public transport: The TāmakiLink bus from downtown Auckland runs along Tamaki Drive and stops at Mission Bay. • By car / parking: There are parking options, including the “Promenade” parking off Patteson Ave. Some are free for customers (with ParkMate app) or limited-time. On busy, nice days (weekends, summer) parking fills up quickly. • Facilities: Toilets, changing rooms, showers near the beach/promenade. Playground, green...

I have been reviewing and sharing interesting places around the world via Twitter or X Platform under @davidlim account. Besides that, my travel blog on Google is almost 17 years old now and covers wide interest topics like technology, travel, and world news.

Mission Bay is a popular seaside suburb of Auckland with the beach as a focal point of activity. The stretch of golden sand enjoys prominent views of Rangitoto Island. There are plenty of seating areas and picnic tables to attract locals and tourists alike who can enjoy lunch at the beach. The Fish Pot Cafe, situated opposite the beach, is on hand to serve up delicious fish and chips to be enjoyed while taking in the postcard views. Just behind the beach is Selwyn Domain, a small park area which features a much-photographed water fountain that's a favourite with kids. Mission Bay has a thriving cafe and restaurant scene, lining the main through road and overlooking the sea. For those that enjoy a walk, it's approximately a 45-minute trek from downtown Auckland along a pathway that follows the coastline with lovely views of the city and Hauraki Gulf. The area used to be referred to as 'Kohimarama', a name now given to a neighbouring suburb. Present-day Mission Bay takes its name from the Melanesian Mission, which was established by the Anglican Bishop George Augustus Selwyn at the bay at the end of the 1840s. In 1944, a Chamber of Commerce committee recommended the development of Mission Bay into a tourist and recreational center to help diversify the City's economy, which was largely military. In the late 1940s, dredging and filling operations began converting the marsh into the jewel that is today Mission Bay Park. #MissionBay #Auckland #NewZealand #Travel #BeachLife

First visit and loved it straight away. More of a Love at First Sight kinda feeling. 😁 I had been there on a weekend. Lots of people. It's obvious that the kiwis do love to come out of their houses during the weekend. Undoubtedly clean. It was recommended by a Filipino friend of mine. It's not just about the views of the beach but there are many restaurants and eateries nearby and obviously it's one of those places where you can find a lot of people, especially on the weekends. The temperature here kinda settles in the evening. Good for a quick walk, job for fitness enthusiasts. It has a...
