We arrived at 9 PM, excited to see the little penguins coming ashore. However, it quickly became clear that we were a bit too early. A very kind older lady, who was volunteering there, explained to us where the best spots were to see the penguins and where their nests are located. She also mentioned that in the previous days, the first penguin didnât come ashore until 10:15 PM. While this was helpful information, it also meant we had about an hour of waiting ahead of us.
The first penguin finally appeared at 10:30 PM, and although the wait was a bit long, it was absolutely worth it. Watching them waddle along the beach was an adorable and heartwarming experience. The way they moved and interacted with each other was fascinating and truly special to witness.
If youâre planning a visit, itâs definitely something Iâd recommend, but you need to bring both time and patience. The experience is unforgettable, and seeing these little creatures in their natural habitat is magical. Just be prepared for potentially long waiting times and dress warmly, as it can get...
Read moreWhat a fabulous place to see penguins in pure nature. We came here at beginning dusk around 21:00 and we spent around 1,5 hours to see 2 penguins - one chick and one adult. They only come when itâs completely dark. I personally recommend to stand at the Marina parade to see them coming in and going into the rocks to feed the chicks. Donât wait at the beach, I would say. At that moment when we were there only a few penguins were left in Timaru, so the chance to see many was not given. You should be aware that the main season to see many penguins is from October to December only. There is volunteers who also stand at the street and are very much willing and supportive in giving information. At night it got very cold and windy, so better be prepared as it takes a bit of...
Read moreAs a Canadian, this was an incredible experience to witness. Watching the smallest penguin species on earth return home after a long day of hunting was so magical. The penguins are sooo adorable and boisterous! There are plenty of viewing spots and itâs free! You get up super close to them.
On November 23, the first penguin arrived 9:09pm by the rocks. There mustâve been 15 or so penguins. Please note they come a couple at a time and just hang around, keeping close to the rocks eventually making their way to the vegetation so keep an eye out. They are small and when itâs dark it can be hard to spot in the shadows but the volunteers will help point them out and everyone was helpful. Just follow the cameras, youâll know when...
