Great place to visit. The historic statue represents lot of the epic events happened in past. Proud to read the history about as he plotted the first map of New Zealand. Coast region of the island known as poverty bay when first discovered. We made so far Great till now. Proud to be in New Zealand, place of peace and nature.

This statue marks Cook's arrival in NE New Zealand and it was not really an auspicious occasion with some of the crew killing local Maori due to a "misunderstanding" - not a great start and typical of the mixed legacy of Cook's Pacific voyages.

There is lots of parking in the reserve area, and you can use the walkways along the waterfront to get to the statue. Has history on statue.
