I stumbled upon this place as I saw a few men waking in this dimly lit building in the dark. Needless to say in Gisborne I needed to venture in as it may prove an adventure, and an adventure it was! Through the hallway of this antique building was a mysterious door, which led me to a speakeasy bar! It was all glowingly red inside which looked like an opium den. The vibe was on 🔥 . I went to bar looking for foods but I saw a sign showing a film screening! Apparently this was the Dome cinema which I have vaguely heard from a guidebook. Asked for a ticket the guy said it was fully booked. Recommend me staying chilling in case somebody cancelled. Reluctantly but adventurously I did somehow. The friendly guy spoke greatly of how he went to 🇻🇳 last month which was my hometown! Got a beer recommendation from him, God the kiwis beers, even from a can, is good. Waited there for half an hour until a lady came saying somebody cancelled and could fill me in. Ticket was $15. The cinema was in a dome building which is very aesthetic. The cushions were comfier than I thought, since normally I sit when going to cinemas. Another crazy thing: you can order a pizza which will be served during break, which is mad; which I did. Pizza is $24: not on a cheap side but good. This level of comfy is just on kiwi level but it feels so cozy and non pretentious. Overall it felt like a family outdoor cinema because the vibe was so good and space is so aesthetic compared to normal stuffy cinemas settings. The movie was “The Way, My Way” which was a good one for such an eccentric place in a lazing winter day. I strongly recommend that film 👍, so legit for any adventurous souls out there. Needless to say such an adventure ended up my night so fully. I think the place really speaks for the true spirit of Gisborne, during the first sight it looks a bit dull but when you dig deeper there was a whole world down under, which is crazy. Some pictures here show how crazy it is to believe this is Gisborne. I could not wait to come back for more authentic...

Ambiance was amazing but service time was a failure. Tonight we arrived and ordered 7.44pm (2 steak & 2 cider). The one who served us never informed about the waiting time. We sat down and have a good chat. Around 8.35pm we followed up our orders (that's already 45mins of waiting). The service guy said it will come soon. After 5mins he informed us that it will take another 25mins because they have a lot of customers who ordered before us.

I believed the management should always inform customers in regards to their waiting time. Service guy said 1 to 2 hours was their regular waiting time due to lack of manpower due to a busy night. Well they did not inform us from start, end of story so disappointing about the service rendered to us. I will understand if you guys told us that our orders was forgotten, but instead you guys blame with the staff shortage and the long time of waiting was just a regular thing.

Hope this review will be seen by all your future customers so that they know how long it take an order from your level 4.8...

We had a work dinner here and we were amazed by the ambience of the place. It was really quirky and cozy. We were just disappointed with the service: there was a mock up on our orders and the lady who served our food insisted that the order was taken correctly and she wont accept our explanation and just left the extra food on our table. It was kinda rude for her to not listen though. But the lady who took our order came to us and apologize and gave the food for free. It took a long time for the original order to arrive though and my poor colleague was the only one eating at that time coz we were all finished with our food when it was served. We were asking for the pizza too but they said its only for people going to the cinema but we've seen the table next to us was served a pizza, (so why?!) We ordered everything on the menu except for the pakoras. They were okay but I wouldnt come back for it (just the 3-cheese mushroom dip). Otherwise, the whole experience was lovely because of the set-up and vibe of the...

Well...that was very cool. Had dinner here. Quite exceptional. Fabulous decor, simple menu...I think just 5 or 6 options for a main course... the service are great and personal and professional. It has an adjoining cinema apparently. Didnt go there, just had dinner. Probably only has about 10 tables...maybe one or two more...hard to say. Perhaps you should book. We didn't. Even better is that it's hard to find...tucked inside the inside of an old building. Just a delight.

The highlight of Gisbourne… truly. Such a cute vibey place, a true destination you could spend hours in. Great cocktails, so so much attention to detail. Sadly I didn’t get the chance to watch a film here but I’d fly back from Auckland just to watch a classic here. Truly wonderfully and I wish more people were as passionate as this in small towns around the country. Don’t miss.
