I’ve been here in the past, and it definitely wasn’t as good this time around. Starting off with the drink, I had the virgin mojito in the flavor raspberry, and the raspberry really didn’t work with the mint; it might have been better if I had gotten the plain or passion fruit flavor instead. I then got the bread entrée, which was the best thing that I had but still not great. The mini pizza rolls part of the description made me think that the entrée would include mini pizza rolls, but they were just plain dough balls, and there really wasn’t enough bread. I remember around five years ago, for only $12, they would give you like half a loaf of bread, not one bun. There were also pebbles on the plate, kind of like the ones that you get from the dollar store in the mini net bags for your primary school miniature garden. I’m not sure why they were there; are they really putting twenty pebbles per bread entrée in the washing machine? It really doesn’t seem worth the hassle. I then got the steak, and the overall experience didn’t improve; before that, though, I had left about half of my butter from the bread to have with my main, but they took it while I was in the bathroom. 😑 I wish they hadn’t, though, because the butter was the highlight of the dinner, and I wasn’t done with it. The steak itself wasn’t bad, but other than the jus and the stuff on top of the steak, everything else in the meal didn’t go well together. I didn’t want to leave feeling disappointed, so I got a dessert, but it was probably the worst part of the night. I got the crème brûlée, but the top wasn’t as crunchy or crisp as you would want or expect it to be, and the custard consistency wasn’t custard-like at all and was instead really thick. I knew that it wasn’t going to be included in the dessert, but it really would have benefited from some ice cream.

A Hidden Gem in Gisborne – The Works Dining at The Works in Gisborne is an experience not to be missed. Set in a beautifully renovated abattoir, the restaurant perfectly blends rustic charm with modern comfort. The atmosphere is both vibrant and welcoming, making it an ideal spot for everything from a casual lunch to a special night out. The meals are absolutely delicious – every dish is thoughtfully prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Whether you’re after a hearty steak, a creative vegetarian option, or something sweet to finish, the menu offers something for everyone. What truly sets The Works apart is the incredible service. The staff are friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about what they do. Their warmth adds an extra layer to the already fantastic dining experience. Highly recommend this gem to anyone visiting Gisborne – it’s a must-

Hmmmmm where to start?!? the experience is not that much pleasant. The moment we stepped in, we felt that we’re not in the right place, as one staff looked at us like we have no capacity to pay. Its just so sad because its our first time… the menu explained well about the variety of food they served but unfortunately, the food that came to us lacked some of its ingredients indicated in the menu. We raised the concern to one of the food server and appreciate her hospitality and sincere apology but not the captain of that “shift” (never talked to us at all, sorry can’t help comparing to other restaurant and for the fact that we too we’re in food industry before)… other thing is to consider the temperature of the food when served. The steak we ordered is medium-well but not warm-cold so we really dont know how long the steak was sitting there waiting for us 😜 As we looked on the other tables occupied with wonderful human beings enjoying their lunch, they were eating with mats but we have nothing… saaad! We felt pity for ourselves. the ambience is amazing though and like i’ve said, the food servers were accomodating… went out in the restaurant as partially to unsatisfied customer but we don’t believe in first impression lasts but who knows, we may...

While we had a previous positive experience at this establishment, our recent visit left us somewhat disheartened. The catch of the day, a dish we had enjoyed before, unfortunately fell short this time. The chips and fish were somewhat overcooked, encased in a thicker batter than usual, making it a bit of a challenge to eat. Regrettably, the salad accompanying the dish was stale.

Our party also ordered medium cooked steak, Sadly, both servings arrived somewhat overdone, with the chips and salad being overcooked and stale.

However, the pork belly dish was good. Yet, it too was accompanied by chips that were over cooked.

When we conveyed our feedback to the staff, they assured us that it would be passed on to the chef. It's disheartening to note, however, that previous reviews also highlight similar concerns, suggesting a need for improvement in consistency.

In conclusion, we hope that our feedback, along with the accumulated insights from other people, will prompt some positive adjustments to enhance the dining experience at this...
