Fresh, local produce offered straight to the public from small market gardeners / wholesalers. This Sunday, open-air market between Te Papa and Waitangi Park is a great resource for Wellingtonians as produce is much fresher and cheaper than those found in the supermarkets. It is much smaller than the Hutt Riverbank Market but seems adequate as stalls do not run out of stock except for some lines at the end of the day. Prices can vary from stall to stall for some items but on the whole these truck-stalls are still competitive.
And when it comes to variety, markets are your best sources, eg. find various Chinese mustard greens and other Asian vegs such as Kang Kong (water spinach, water convolvulus), snake beans (Yard Long Beans / Chinese Long Beans), Asian gourds, bitter-gourds, winter melons, daikons, Asian brinjals, Asian fruit, fresh spices and herbs, etc. when in season (in addition to the usual lineup found in supermarkets). You can haggle if you wish for boxes of over-ripe / old produce which stall owners will usually offload for a modest fee at closing time eg. bananas, other fruit (ok for cooking purposes).
