A night at the theatre at Circa with the family has to be one of the most fun things to do in Wellington. It's a wonderful and iconic theatre that has just enough magic and grandeur about it to create an excitement in its atmosphere for anyone visiting - even before the play starts. Seats are wonderfully close to the stage to give a real intimacy for the audience. Seats comfy, staff relaxed and welcoming, refurbished Cafe and bar area very nice and well laid out - could do with a few more tables and chairs for theatre patrons. Carpaking easy at TePapa next door - all in all a wonderful asset in the arsenal of entertainment Wellington has to offer - and one of my all time favourites to visit.

Circa on the waterfront is a lively & innovative theatre which started life as a conscientious separation from the "old British dinosaurs" occupying NZ theatre - hence their novel lineup to this day. Their unashamed willingness to challenge convention is seen in their 1 Taranaki St. premises, which aren't just a distinctive brick masonry façade - but rather an unusual agglomeration of shapes, masses, building styles & materials, previously voted (we think unfairly!) as one of the 10 ugliest designs in the city.

On Sunday we watched one of the most extraordinary shows I’ve ever seen. Owl’s Do Cry. Moving, physical, poignant, crazy, angry, sad—what a bloody rollercoaster. Nga mihi to all cast, crew and Circa leadership. This was one for the ages and I’ll treasure the way it moved me and spoke to me forever. Amazing.

We were very disappointed with the food we purchased. A $50 bottle of wine accompanied something called "salad greens and a vegetable frittata" The frittata was dry and looked and tasted like it had been in a fridge for more than a day. No effort had been made with the salad greens that looked and tasted stale and wilted. I also had asked for "chunky fries" as a starter, and saw the server take a bag of chips out of a freezer just a few moments before he brought them to our table. They had been microwaved and were flabby, and they weren't chunky at all. The staff were pleasant, but please Circa, if you are serving food, couldn't you go to just a bit more effort. Your wines are not cheap, and we would have been happy to pay more to have a meal we...

Cafe review only: Our tabletop was sticky, and so was the carpet. Service at the counter was slow and inattentive - it was a very busy evening, but some basics were skipped. Very limited selection for diet restrictions on this occasion - they had run out of GF pizza bases. Once ordered, the food was slow to arrive, and one of our meals was missed. My second-choice meal was the cauliflower rosti: presentation appeared very hasty. While the sauce was delicious, I felt the dish was overall not worth its $28 price tag. The pizzas did look good, and were eaten happily by others in our group. I would only dine here again if I could be confident it would be a slow enough night for staff to have breath for...
