From the moment we arrived, the service from all staff was simply fantastic. Reception staff welcoming and professional, food and beverage staff friendly and attentive and the room offered elegance, was lovely and warm on a cold day (Radiated heat from their own geothermal bore), was spotless, roomy and very well appointed! The personalised note from the GM Yuri was a lovely touch! Relaxing in the hotel's hot pools after a busy day visiting local attractions, was blissful. 3 hot pools all with different temperatures and even a private hotpool you can book! Loved the compendium in the room which had the history of the hotel (It was relocated and rebuilt in Rotorua around 100 years ago!). Also thought the quality bathrobes was a lovely touch! Our dining experience in the busy hotel restaurant was simply amazing. George was our waiter for the night and gave us service second to none! He recommended wines to match our food and was spot on! Our amazing meal consisted on Rowena Potato Bread baked on site (Yummy) entree's of Smoked Venison, blue cheese, beetroot and lettuce and Trio of Salmon. Both entree's were amazing and combination of flavours unbelievable. Our mains were Chicken Breast with an amazing corn and cranberry stuffing with roasted veges and beef cheeks, mashed potato and roast veges. Both meals cooked to perfection, full of taste and well presented. A nice touch was both chefs coming out to say hi (Tian and Head Chef DJ). Wonderful to see chefs with so much passion to provide guests with wonderful experiences. This hotel has been renovated to an amazing standard whilst maintaining the historic nature and ambience. The quality of service from the staff are a credit to the GM and hotel! Phil and Ali

In my opinion this hotel is living off of its reputation and its standards have slipped. While this hotel is in a great location there are some real issues with the hotel and is definetly not worth the money. Also be warned from the 27th the bar and restaurant isn't opening at the moment for refurb and they don't know when it will re-open. The rooms have also recently been refurbished but they have been done so badly, even staff we spoke to questioned the refurbishments and the quality of them. I'll start with the pros as there are less of them; hotel is in a great location, comfortable beds, friendly staff and the rooms have been recently refurbished Now onto the very long list of cons; Bar and restaurant closed for the foreseeable with no end date in sight, we weren't informed of this prior to booking Lack of plugs throughout the rooms Poor rewiring in the hotel Carpet badly laid and cut Loose pipes and valves from the refurb on the walls 3 cups for a 4 person room 2 person table and 2 chairs for a 4 person room Lack of shampoo and body wash in the shower, only given conditioner No air con or heating apart from in the lounge Rooms right by the guest laundry and staff storage area where staff come and go, meaning from 7am you have people shouting outside your window Shower curtain doesn't stop water going onto the floor and makes the bathroom wet Windows don't open properly or at all Door in second bedroom couldn't shut due to bed blocking it from shutting and it surpassing the frame Poor views from rooms No hob in the kitchen No bins in the bathroom or bedrooms Only one mirror which is located in the bathroom

Our recent stay at the hotel began with a glimmer of hope, thanks to its charming exterior and the warm welcome from the staff. The hotel’s historic essence hinted at a promising stay. However, our expectations were quickly dampened upon encountering our accommodations. Despite the hotel’s age, which could contribute to its character, we found the interior severely lacking in upkeep and modernization. The furniture appeared mismatched and of low quality, failing to offer the comfort or aesthetic one might expect for the price. The kitchen and bathroom were particularly disappointing, with the latter suffering from a flickering light, a partially broken mirror, and an overused bathtub that hadn’t been cleaned to standard, evidenced by the unsettling discovery of several strands of black hair. Our two-bedroom suite, which cost us $460 for a single night, was underwhelming. The second bedroom featured two small, seemingly random beds that detracted from the overall value and experience. Furthermore, the hotel’s pools were smaller than anticipated, and our relaxation was hindered by the feeling of being observed by restaurant guests. In summary, while the hotel possesses a certain historical charm and benefits from a friendly staff, the lack of investment in quality furnishings and the state of the facilities do not justify the high cost of stay. It’s disheartening to report that the experience fell short of our expectations, particularly considering the potential this establishment has to offer.
