The south-eastern corner of Lake Rotorua is known as Sulphur Bay and is made up of a Wildlife Refuge and a Wildlife Sanctuary. It has plenty of geothermal features including boiling mudpools, naturally hot water and steam. Just beyond the Rotorua Museum and along the south-eastern corner of Lake Rotorua, you’ll find an amazing volcanic playground to explore that’s also home to unique plantlife and threatened birds who’ve adapted in order to survive in this harsh environment. The water is low in oxygen and quite acidic (pH 3.5). Birds are often seen with the webs of their feet eaten away by the acidic waters.

Sulphur Point, located in Rotorua, New Zealand, is a unique and fascinating area known for its remarkable geothermal activity and rich Maori history. This area, part of the larger Rotorua geothermal zone, offers a distinctive experience that's quite different from the usual tourist spots. One of the most striking features of Sulphur Point is its landscape, which is characterized by steaming vents, boiling mud pools, and the unmistakable smell of sulphur. This otherworldly scenery is not just a visual spectacle but also a testament to the powerful natural forces at work beneath the earth's surface.

Honestly it might be a little hard for me to give anything a 5 around the lake when the sulphur smell is so strong that you can't stay long, but it is nature. Anyways, this point isn't all too much besides more gravely sand and a few more bubbling crater pools. The most interesting part is the foot sized 'cave' holes that blast out hot hot air and steam. Don't put your hand too close, but just enough to feel it! No benches or anything here, but again, don't think you'd want to be here that long anyway

The area is well-maintained with accessible walking paths that allow for easy exploration of the geothermal features. The informative signage provides educational insights into the geothermal activity and the history of the region. Many reviews highlight the fascinating and sometimes dramatic geothermal displays, which make for an intriguing visit.
