The Fox Glacier South Side Walkway/Cycleway follows the south bank of the Fox River through ancient podocarp rainforest. The track heads gently up the valley crossing ancient glacial moraine surfaces, with the forest reflecting the various ages of the glacier moraines which it has colonised.
The first viewpoint of the glacier is reached after approximately 40 minutes walk, before the track continues to reach an old car park. This is as far as you can cycle – all bikes must be left here before continuing on foot.

Read moreYou must go after dark to see that glow worms which are pretty spectacular when you get a chance to see them but there a heaps of people and lots of those people do not understand that you can't see glow worms with you lights on. It's very important that you limit the amount of noise and light when trying to find glow worms because those thing can make them not shine their light. I would suggest going late at night, like 11pm or later, to ensure the majority of people have left and you can just turn your lights off let your eyes adjust and walk that track in serenity allowing the glow worms...
Read moreExcellent walk at night to see gloworms. We went around 9pm and arrived at the same time as a party of 50+ tourists with bright lights and lots of noise! As mentioned by others this isn’t good for seeing gloworms so we waited for them to get some way ahead. The experience is best if you avoid using lights and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness and take it easy along the paths.
