This is a big, clean, quiet really well-run tourist park with great options for all budgets. There’s camping, van sites and dozens of small, but well-equipped permanent cabins. The park also has a great kids play area, 2 huge kitchens, and a decent coin operated laundry (though half the machines are broken so you may find yourselves having to wait). We chose a small cabin, and while space was tight, it enabled us to have a small separate sitting room, our own bathroom, and enough space to cook our own meals. However, beware, the small store in town doesn’t have a lot of stock, so buy up at Franz Josef or other places before you get here, or you’ll be struggling. We stayed 3 nights and found it the perfect base for both glaciers and the nearby Lake Matheson café.

One of my favourite places we stayed at in the South Island with views of the mountains. We arrived in the early evening as the sun was setting on the nearby hills and mountains and it just looked magical. Stayed in a cabin for four, which was warm and had access to the communal amenities. The amenities were good, lots of room for plenty of guests. We had a visit from a miromiro/tomtit in the morning, who flew into our room as we were packing up. It was so cute! We also made use of the hot tub, which was perfect in the cold West Coast weather (end of April). The pool was a little hot, so we were in and out of the water during our allocated time. We heard some kiwi calls that night too, as there are wild kiwi in the area. The staff were very friendly too.

The facilities were good, a really nice spot with great views of the mountains. Staff were friendly and it was a clean and tidy set up. Only complaint was that the entrance door of our unit had a window, and whilst the window was opaque it was still half the size of the door and allowed the outdoor light of the property in. It meant we saw the shadow when someone walked past on one occasion which could be unsettling if someone is staying there alone. We would suggest the Top10 put up a curtain or something for these types of doors so if someone prefers to sleep in darkness they have that ability and to ensure a better feeling of privacy. In saying that we still had a great sleep on a very comfortable bed.

Really poor experience here. Currently on our honeymoon camping around NZ, had booked a site for our camper online which all went smoothly but decided to upgrade to a studio cabin for the night due to a lot of rain that day and we had preferred to cosy up with the luxury of a heater and kitchen indoors. Reception staff were amazingly slow, taking 10 minutes to check each person in and the other staff member was on a phone call for the entire duration there was a queue growing. They advertise there is a hot spa and sauna on site but when asking how to go about using it was told it is out of order. Slow wifi. Was awoken by someone drilling and hammering on the roof directly above us at 7am and has been ongoing for the last hour and a half. Super super loud noise because it was directly above us. Really not a good start to the morning. Thought I'd go and do some laundry while the other half sorted breakfast. All the machines in the laundry were out of order and they charge $2 for every 15 minutes!? Had 2 encounters with a male staff member from reception this morning with zero customer service skills whatsoever and no apology for the noise disturbances or for the laundry issue - a junior 14 year old could have done a better job. The cookware in the cabins was unusable as had been cleaned incorrectly by the person who had previously used it. The cabin was really nice in terms of layout and was hoping for a nice change from the camper but our experience of this holiday park was incredibly disappointing. Would absolutely NOT stay here again in terms of value for money (you could stay in a decent hotel for less that what they charge for a studio cabin in a caravan park), poor customer service, and poor...

As requested, here are more comments about our more than bad experience at this top 10. We arrive an hour before closing time and still there was no one at reception, our infos were in a late-arrival box, even if we were not late-arrival. People tend to arrive before closing time to ask for coins to use the laundry, book a spa session and just ask questions about the surroundings. When i called to speak with an employee, she was so rude that i didn’t even bother to ask her anything since we were only staying there one night. The place was so crowded in general, haven’t had the chance to use the showers because they were always occupied when i try to go. Only one BBQ was working because the other didn’t had gaz anymore or was just broken… Didn’t had the chance to use it because there were so many people waiting to use the only working one. Floors were so slippery in the restrooms because the showers were constantly running, and before going to sleep one toilet didn’t have toilet paper anymore… the next morning it was 2 out of 3 with not toilet paper. I explained in details all the things that were not convenient in the satisfaction survey sent to us after our stay with absolutely no come-back at us, that really is a shame and a poor way to deal with customers. More amenities should have been opened and if you have an on-call staff, just make sure she is being nice to customers, especially when they do are calling during normal office hours. We had amazing time in other Top 10 locations around New Zealand, but Fox Glacier was definitely not...

The room was average at best. Old amenities and claustrophobic in its size and layout. There were two young gentlemen staff members who were very friendly and helpful during check in and when we had an issue with water.

I understand that renovations and upgrades to facilities and rooms are inevitable. HOWEVER, our room was the only room located next to very loud construction work. We couldn't sleep in as we had a Bulldozer driving around in very early times of the morning only a couple of metres from a room along with foul mouthed construction workers. I don't understand why management couldn't have pre-empted this and maybe placed us into a different room as from what we could see there were a few empty rooms situated in the park. Additionally our water was cut off during the day so we couldn't have showers and do simple things like boil water for food and tea/coffee. The young man who I spoke to at reception was lovely and very promptly escalated the issue. Although the water did eventually come on, the older woman who came to our room told me "You just have to be patient and deal with it.". No apologies for any inconveniences NOTHING. At the end of the day I'm a paying customer. I'm paying for a place to stay, I'm paying for a service and I expect to be able to do BASIC things like shower and have some coffee/tea. Don't tell me to be patient and just deal with it.

Would NOT recommend, stay in Franz Josef maybe or at the hotel down the road. I'm sure they are more accomodating there and would apologise for any...
