We were on the way to the supermarket when I spotted this place. I googled it and instantly knew we had to go and visit. We were greeted by the lovely Lee (sorry if misspelled) who is spikes wife. Spike was away at a Lego show, so she kindly took us through. It operates a bit like a tour, so Spike or Lee will lead you through each room and talk about the various builds and their significance.
When I tell you this is a MUST visit in waihi, I mean it! This isn't just for kids. It's also for adults who can appreciate 30+ years of collecting, building, and love of a craft. There are 5 rooms filled with the most amazing lego creations. Moving trains and Rollercoasters, vehicles and planes suspended from the roof, buildings, flowers, sets from movies, and more! This is such a labor of love!!
There is also an interactive part where you can drive some remote controlled lego cars - this was a fun little addition to admiring the many builds.
Definitely give yourself a good amount of time to go through - you dont want to miss a thing! My was the house from home alone, the titanic, the nasa vehicles, and the fab 5 set!
If you love Lego, there are also many sets you can purchase - ones you wouldn't find anywhere else in NZ!
I would love to come back another day to see what has been added since...
Read moreWhile there is plenty of Lego on offer to see, personally I was really disappointed with the exhibition and my 4 year old daughter was unimpressed too.
There were two main reasons for my dissatisfaction. The first was that there was very little opportunity for interaction with any Lego aside from one small car race track. In every room my daughter asked me what she could play with but it was a case of "look, don't touch".
Secondly, as an adult, I would have liked to have read a little about the models I was seeing - a little history in to the model and whether it held any significance to the owner, or to NZ or to anything else really. But it was just model after model, with no additional insight. Perhaps if you're lucky enough to talk with the owner then this wouldn't be such an issue but, on my visit, it was busy and he didn't have time to spend with us.
Overall, I think there was a lot of room for improvement and I don't think it was a particularly great place for young kids, particularly for the price. You could be better off taking your dollars and buying a Lego set to build at home...
Read moreThis is a NZ version of a Lego museum in all but name. Effectively this is a display on one mans extensive collection of Lego kits in multiple rooms of a building on Hazard St. The proprietor, as you would imagine, is very knowledgeable on all things Lego If you are keen on Lego, it is probably going to be an interesting stop for you. However, enthusiasm and a large collection of kits, do not make a great attraction. There is almost no interaction with the Lego kits (apart from a few remote controlled cars), no is there any particular theme or story to follow. Overall it could be greatly unproved by showing a historical timeline of Lego and the kits over the years. Letting people touch and interact with it and reducing the steep $12 per Adult entry charge. This is a difficult one to recommend in its...
