My husband and I, had booked 2 nights there (new year's eve and new year's day), when we arrived, a lady at reception looked for $NZ 30 for the set of keys, the reception was in the corner of a commun area which was quite dirty looking, filled with old tables and chairs, and a cooking area. The lady brought us up a narrow staircase, showed us a filthy toilet and showers covered in damp patches. Then she opened the door of our bedroom, a musty smell hit us, my husband tried to open the sash window to let in fresh air eventhough it was lashing outside, the whole frame moved. The room was so small that there was no place to even open a hand luggage, we sat on the bed and decided to leave immediately, we went back down to reception and looked for our $NZ 30 back and also asked for a refund of the second night, we got back the $NZ 30 but she wouldn't hear anything about a refund for the second night as we had checked in. Read moreWas very disappointed the way the Chinese manager/owner decided not to refund us our money. We called on the phone telling that we are a party of 10 and that they had accommodation for 7 and she got our hopes up for potentially 9 as another guest had an invalid booking so it sounded promising and was told to hand over our credit card to secure our booking for 7 ($300). Arrived at the Hotel (30min later) to find they only had 7 available as the extra two had been booked. It was at that time we called & found that Waihi Camp & Cabins had accommodation for all 10 of us. Asked (even pleaded) with reception if we could cancel our booking and receive our refund and was told that wasn't possible. We weren't even entitled to a 10% or 30% refund.. At this time of year with Christmas & New Years they could've easily had our rooms booked again as there wasn't any vacancy for the whole Coromandel.
