Kashmiri Gate — Attraction in Lahore City Tehsil

Kashmiri Gate, one of the thirteen historic entrances to Lahore’s Walled City, holds significant cultural and historical importance. Constructed during the Mughal era under Emperor Akbar’s reign (1556–1605), the gate derives its name from its orientation towards Kashmir, serving as the primary entry point for traders and travelers from that region . 

In 2024, the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) completed an extensive conservation project for Kashmiri Gate, with an estimated cost of Rs 11.47 million. The restoration efforts included surface rendering, structural consolidation, and the renovation of fresco linings to restore the gate’s original appearance. Additionally, the surrounding floor was repaired to facilitate visitor access, and the previously non-functional doors were restored to operational condition .  

To preserve the gate’s historical essence, the WCLA removed unauthorized commercial activities and encroachments around the area. Electrical infrastructure was also upgraded to illuminate the gate and support commercial activities within the adjacent bazaar .

I have seen Kashmiri Gate change over the years, and unfortunately, it has been more about destruction than preservation. What was once a symbol of Lahore’s rich history has now been overtaken by uncontrolled commercialization and reckless urban development.

The area is always congested—endless traffic, encroachments, and vendors blocking the roads. Walking here is a struggle, and finding parking is nearly impossible. The noise, pollution, and mismanagement make it hard to appreciate the historical significance of this place.

What hurts the most is the destruction of heritage in the name of "development." Beautiful old structures have been demolished, replaced with modern buildings that have no connection to the past. Instead of preserving the original architecture, authorities have allowed commercial activity to wipe out the historical essence of this landmark.

The neglect is obvious—garbage piles up, there is no proper maintenance, and even the restoration work that has been done feels like an afterthought. There are no signs or information boards to help visitors understand the significance of the gate.

Seeing Kashmiri Gate in this condition is heartbreaking. If things continue like this, future generations won’t even know what was once here. Heritage should be protected, not sacrificed for...
