The dunes are absolutely incredible. Amazing to look at... But this place is not looked after. Lot of rubbish lying around. Careless tour operators and people selling take-aways using soo much single-use plastic cutlery and boxes. It gets rummaged through by the dogs..or people throw it on the ground. The bars stay open all night and play music until around 4am. Dogs bark cats fight.. dune buggies go through the night. This place could be so incredible.. please look after it.
And if you are a tourist..EAT IN..use plates..don't get take away. The locals just dump the rubbish in the dunes and rivers.
Also careful who you pick for the dune buggies and sandboarding. Did not see one operator providing helmets, safety briefs or anything of the sort . (Our was Arenas Sandboarding and buggy tour...not on google). All they want is tips.. it even says so on the exposed metal roll guards on the buggy!! No padding anywhere on the vehicle. Things could end so badly if it wasn't your day. I hit my head on the roof despite my 5 point harness (really a 3-point as the waist belts were missing!) Also don't let the driver go without everyone having their (dodgy) seatbelts on. They won't...
Read moreA magical, almost mystical place of beauty, that actually makes you see that even plain brown sand can be amazingly beautiful. The sand dunes undulate in gorgeous patterns and when standing amongst them you catch a metaphorical sense of infinity. The vendors offering the sand dune buggy rides are friendly, but don't let them charge you more than 20 Peruvian Soles per person. The ride is thrilling and euphoric but NOT for the faint of heart , nor would I recommend it for children or teenagers. There is risk involved and this would not be an honest review if I didn't mention that. But for adults with a craving for a wild zoom zoom through the sand dunes, it is a once in a lifetime hair raising experience. Please be sure to check you seatbelt harness , and do NOT , I repeat, do NOT attempt to go on this rollercoaster style jaunt through the sand without a seatbelt and the ability to hang on tight. But it is extremely enjoyable! For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, many people skip the buggy car rides and simply walk up the largest sand dune to it's crest that gives you a world class view of the...

Enjoy the pisco sours offered at the various restaurants around the lake. Don't takr your dslr cameras! If you take your gopro, make sure it has a sandproof/waterproof case on it! Lots amd...
