What the name implies, the Hanging Coffins of Sagada are coffins that are hanged on the sides of cliffs and cave walls. Ropes and wires are used to suspend the coffins, which are constructed from hollowed-out wood. The Igorot people have a traditional burial style that involves hanging coffins, which is thought to have been used for more than 2,000 years.
This burial custom stems from the Igorot people's beliefs in the afterlife. They think that the closer a body is to heaven, the higher it is positioned. The dead are also said to be protected from wild animals and floods by the hanging coffins.
Experiencing the Sagada Hanging Coffins is a totally unique experience. The graves are situated on the cliff's edge and are clearly visible from a distance. Visitors must make a short climb to the cliff wall to get a better look. They will learn about the history and culture of the Igorot people as they travel and enjoy stunning views of the landscape in the area.
The Hanging Coffins of Sagada are uncannily spooky, but the location is also very tranquil and quiet. In addition to the sound of the surrounding river, the coffins are surrounded by beautiful flora.

Read moreThe whole trekking experience is great. We enjoyed the whole terrain and the tourist guide is excellent. He really took good care of us all. I can also say that he really loves his job and his town because he reprimanded some foreigners going about on their own even in some prohibited area. He was telling them why they were strict on the guide policy. I can't blame them though, the trail is an easy one to trek. You could just follow it without a guide. But there are just people who are rebels and don't care about the consequences of their actions to the whole town's livelihood if they come across an accident. So if you're new in these parts, you should have some guides. If you're that hard headed or just confident, it's up to you. The hanging coffins can be seen almost every cave way high up in some mountains beyond the trail that I think only guides knew and they showed it to us. I'm glad I brought some binoculars with me. There are also coffins that we encounter up close. It was creepy. What made this place great is the whole trekking experience. Great...
Read moreHighly NOT recommended the GUIDES! Total ripoff for Php 600 just for the guide aside from the other fees. The guide was not helpful at all! We have senior citizens & pwd yet they allowed us to pay first & when we were inside, the guide told us they cannot do the hike and should wait instead. Then why would you ask for them to pay as well? He was exaggerating the trail when in fact it was only 10 minutes from the entrance to see the hanging coffin. He was very rude and would not even explain properly. He was in a rush to get another group to SCAM. The place is nice but for the guide to rip us off for a 10 minute hike & everyone in this municipality only cares about payments! Not hospitable & the system is useless. Definitely would not come back. Not worth the drive if they will treat you that way.
EDIT: we don't know if he's a real guide or a scam because he was not wearing ID like the other ones and just wearing casual...
