Vigan has produced a lot of the country’s heroes who came from various fields. Father Burgos is the only one from the clergy. He fought for ecclesiastical reforms to ease the inequality suffered by Filipino priests during his time. He was executed in Manila’s Bagumbayan together with two other clergy reformists. They are collectively known in Philippine history as the Gomburza, which stands for their surnames Gomez, Burgos and Zamora. If you are a couple, I suggest renting a Kalesa or Horse carriage to go around the most scenic spots in Vigan. They cost p150 per hour and it comes with a Tour guide (the driver/horseman) but expect to take more than an hour to finish the whole route. If you're lucky, the horseman will take pictures for you . So better be nice to him when asking for favors. It's a nice place to visit if you're into "Somewhere in Time" type of movies and if you like old house structures (Bahay na Bato). Don't forget to visit the old municipal jail, where Pres Elpidio Quirino was born..literally. By all means bring a wide brimmed hat.
