Cathedral of St. John the Baptist — Attraction in Wrocław

Perched on the eastern edge of Ostrow Tumski and flanked by the River Odra from the south and the Botanic Gardens from the north, Wroclaw Cathedral is a monumental Gothic brick structure that deserves more than a five-star rating. Strengthened by massive side buttresses (clearly visible as you roam around the structure) and fronted by two distinctive needle-thin bell towers, this amazing basilica is Wroclaw’s finest ecclesiastical building, both with regard to its external design and layout as well as in respect of its great number of first-class works of art housed inside. As you move towards the structure from the front, you will stand in awe as you gaze at the mind-boggling multi-layered portal that adorns the main entrance. Crammed with carved Biblical scenes, this Gothic doorway is none less than a skillful attempt at producing a great work of art on a curved stone surface. Move on to the north portal and you will be faced again with another equally-majestic Gothic doorway crammed with more stone sculptures. The front facade of the basilica, purposely constructed in stone is chock-a-block with carved statues of saints, all housed in ornamental niches. The bell towers are lofty and steep and their architectural beauty cannot be appreciated unless one moves down to the bank of the Odra from where the view is superb. More magnificent is the view from the opposite bank of the river. (There’s an excellent lookout point a few steps west of the National Museum.) Wroclaw Cathedral is unfortunately neither original nor authentic. It is the result of a meticulous and painful post-war reconstruction that took into account all the details of the previous Gothic form. In fact, what you see inside is nothing more than a collection of artifacts obtained from other neighbouring Silesian churches. The highlight is the Veit Stoss triptych on the high altar, a monumental work of art, intricately carved in limewood, painted and gilded. It depicts the Dormition of the Virgin and dates back to the onset of the 16th century. A Gothic Marian Chapel, right behind the high altar contains a couple of extraordinary works of art (that include an exquisite Gothic altarpiece) that require more attention than a passing glance. The two Baroque chapels, one on each side of the Marian Chapel (added later to the existing structure) house a breathtaking variety of paintings and medals and an impressive, though patchy...

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Katedra w. Jana Chrzciciela) while I was in Wrocaw, Poland. As a regular traveller, I have a strong desire to learn about other cultures. Anyone who likes breathtaking architecture, exquisite design, and religious history should visit this magnificent church.

I was immediately taken aback by the building's magnitude and majesty upon arrival. The beautiful statues and delicate carvings on the cathedral's façade are only a few of the incredibly detailed features. The interior is equally spectacular, including high vaulted ceilings, stunning stained glass windows, and an elusive sense of tranquilly.

I was particularly drawn to the cathedral's many pieces of art and sacred relics since I have always been captivated by the background and meaning of religious art. There was no shortage of historical and cultural significance to discover, from the elaborate altar and pulpit to the exquisitely preserved tombs of renowned bishops and archbishops.

However, the aspect of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist that most impressed me was the atmosphere of awe and respect that pervaded the entire structure. There was a noticeable air of stillness and reflection despite the constant stream of guests and tourists, which added to the experience's potency.

In conclusion, I heartily urge anyone visiting Wroclaw or the surrounding area to pay a visit to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. This cathedral is a true gem and a tribute to the ongoing tradition of faith and culture in Poland, regardless of whether you are a history buff, an art enthusiast, or simply someone who loves the power of breathtaking...

Archikatedra p/w św Jana Chrzciciela znajduje się w najstarszej części Wrocławia , czyli na Ostrowie Tumskim .Pierwsze wzmianki o istniejącym w tym miejscu kościele pochodzą już z 10 w. Obecny kształt architektoniczny katedry to wynik wielu zmian związanych z historią Dolnego Śląska. Inicjatorem budowy kościoła w tym miejscu był Bolesław Chrobry , który doprowadził do powstania biskupstwa we Wrocławiu. W czasie rozbicia dzielnicowego i związanego z tym powrotu do dawnych, pogańskich wierzeń co wiązało się z upadkiem wielu kościołów , oraz ich niszczeniem ,również i ten ówczesny kościół ucierpiał . Dopiero następny z Piastów Kazimierz Odnowiciel , zaczął na nowo organizować państwo i wspierać kościół. Odnowił biskupstwo wrocławskie ,wspierany przez biskupa Hieronima , który poprowadził dzieło odbudowy chrześcijaństwa i katedry. Przez następne wieki, ten najważniejszy dla Wrocławia kościół zmieniał się i cieszył pięknym wystrojem kolejne pokolenia wrocławian. Dopiero druga wojna światowa ,przyniosła ogromne zniszczenia po których długo podnosił się z gruzów cały Wrocław w tym również Katedra. Po wielu latach katedra ponownie zachwyca wiernych i turystów. Powrócił do nawy głównej piękny,wykonany ze srebra ołtarz ,a na dwie wieże ,strzeliste iglice. Piękne witraże i stalle oraz wiele innych detali architektonicznych zachwyca kunsztem wykonania . Jeżeli będziecie w okolicy warto tu zajrzeć . Cisza i półmrok jaki tu panuje oraz, świadomość obcowania z Bogiem i historią wielu pokoleń jakie klęczały przed tym ołtarzem budzi podziw dla ludzi którzy mozolne przywracali ten wyjątkowy kościół wiernym z całego Dolnego Śląska . Na jednej z wież znajduje się punk widokowy .Widać z stąd piękną panoramę Wrocławia a przy dobrej pogodzie , masyw Ślęży i dużą część Sudetów. Pierwszą część drogi na wieżę stanowią kręte ,kamienne schody w ilość -40 stopni. Po ich pokonaniu docieramy do windy ,która zawiezie nas na sam szczyt wieży . Koszt takiej przyjemności to w zależności od rodzaju biletu - normalny -15 zł ulgowy -10 zł. Wracając z punktu widokowego, przechodzimy przez pomieszczenia w których prezentowana jest stała wystawa afrykańskich masek. Przez wiele lat gromadzona przez misjonarza , księdza Tadeusza Farysia.
