Castle of Castelo de Vide Type: Castle Time spent: 20-40 min Parking: Limited Bike parking: not available Price: free WC: available [!]Currently, the tower is closed. With the intervention of an embassy from the kingdom of Aragon, peace was reached between D. Dinis and D. Afonso Sanches, who agreed to demolish some of the fortifications he had constructed. Under the regency of D. Pedro, Duke of Coimbra, the defenses of the castles in the Alentejo region were strengthened, including Castelo de Vide. A new architectural stage took place at the end of the 17th century, in the context of the Restoration of Portuguese independence, when modernizations were introduced to adapt it to modern artillery standards. Work began in 1641. Years later, in 1660, this fortification was made of two main areas: the castle, to the west, and the São Roque Fort, to the east, interconnected by bastioned walls.

I visited the Castleo de Vide while I was staying 3 nights in Castelo de Vide in November, 2017. The castle is located atop a very steep hill and the walk up on the cobblestone walk is difficult and for me, killed my knees. It's free to walk around and there also is an excellent small museum as you come into the courtyard which is exhibits of the Neolithic megaliths in the area, artifacts found in the area. Very interesting, however, all the information is in Portuguese no English.

The town of Castelo de Vide is unforgettable. Lots of trendy young adults give it a lovely energy and although we did not find a vegan restaurant, there are many restaurants, boutique shops and cafes in the main square. Its an exhilarating walk up through the old medieval town (with many fabulous renovations) within the castle walls, and the historic Jewish quarter, past gorgeous gardens - rose vines dripping over front doorways, ancient chapels, the ubiquitous cats framed in old stone entrances, village elders taking in the sun, loquat, olive and lemon trees, to reach the top of the castle and be rewarded with breathtaking views that will capture both your imagination and your heart. Well worth a visit and to make time to explore other sorrounding...
