Monument to Ľudovít Štúr — Attraction in Bratislava

In the middle of the Stúrovo square in the middle of the Bratislava Old Town between the building of the Slovak National Gallery and Slovak Symphonic Orchestra. Monumental figurative sculpture of Stúr and his companions is 12.5m high. On granite pylons there are majestic figures of men and women representing characters from Slovak national revival. In front of the sculpture there is granite and metal plaque with a scripture: LUDOViT STÚR Slovak national revivalist 1815-1856. W samym sercu Bratysławy, na eleganckim placu Hviezdoslavovo námestie, stoi pomnik Ľudovíta Štúra – postaci, która dla Słowaków znaczy tyle, co Mickiewicz dla Polaków, Goethe dla Niemców czy Petőfi dla Węgrów. Ojciec słowackiego języka literackiego, poeta, dziennikarz, polityk, myśliciel. I wszystko to czuć w tej kamiennej, monumentalnej sylwetce.

Pomnik nie próbuje być nowoczesny czy zaskakujący. To klasyczne przedstawienie: Štúr stoi dumnie, z lekko uniesioną głową, owiany romantyczną powagą i siłą przekonań. Postać ubrana jest w XIX-wieczny strój, a jej postawa – pełna skupienia i zdecydowania – oddaje charakter człowieka, który nie tylko pisał, ale działał. U jego stóp znajdują się także inne postaci, symbolizujące naród, młodzież, słowacką wieś – wszystko to, za co walczył i co próbował wybudzić ze snu.

Całość utrzymana jest w poważnej, historyzującej konwencji, ale nie trąci przesadnym patosem. Raczej inspiruje do refleksji: o języku, tożsamości, kulturze, a także o tym, jak jedna osoba może mieć ogromny wpływ na losy całego narodu.
