CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST The over 700 years old church is one of the most beautiful examples of the Middle Age architecture and fresco painting in Slovenia. THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST IS A MUST-SEE SIGHT – WHY? Some of the oldest frescoes in Slovenia are found in the church and in front of it. In stylistic terms, the church covers time periods from Romanticism to Baroque. It represents an important cultural and historical monument and is a listed building. The Church of St. John the Baptist is thought to have been built as early as pre1300. The church is located on a rich historical site – archaeological finds, dating from the 1st to the 5th century, have been discovered next to the church. INTERESTING FEATURES AND FACTS ABOUT THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST THE WOODEN HEAD OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST (FROM AROUND 1380): This valuable object of world importance (there are only five more such items in the world) is kept by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, and its copy is displayed in the church. THE FRESCO OF ST. CHRISTOPHER ON THE OUTER SIDE: The patron saint of travellers is also painted in other churches in Bohinj, but only here there are three painted images of the saint in several layers. The first layer was painted around 1300, the second one around 1400 and the third one around 1530. Seeing St. Christopher was reputed to bring good luck and protection for the rest of the day. If you have to choose one picture as a symbol of Slovenija, alongside with Lake Bled and the peak of the Triglav, some people pick that of the little church behind the bridge, where the river meets the lake. Chocolate box stuff. I will, nevertheless, leave a quick advice for those wanting to cover a lot of ground in just one day, as it is the Lake of Bled, the Kobarid Valley and the sea resorts by the Adriatic: it all look quite close in the map but bear in mind that there is an "empty" space in the middle of this which a great Natural Park. Basically, when going to this beautiful place you are driving into a dead end. You cannot proceed to anywhere else but rather should reverse quite a few miles to pick any other...
