During my recent visit to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, I had the pleasure of exploring the historic Ljubljana Castle. Perched atop a hill in the city's center, the castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, coupled with stunning views of the city below.
The Ascent The journey began with a funicular ride to the top, which was both convenient and offered a unique vantage point of the city. For those who prefer a more active approach, the well-marked hiking trails provide a lovely alternative.
The Grounds Upon arrival, the castle's grounds were immaculately kept, with lush greenery and well-preserved structures. The courtyard was a hub of activity, with visitors milling about and taking in the atmosphere.
The History The castle's museum provided an insightful look into the region's history, with exhibits that were both informative and engaging. The Timeline of the Castle exhibit was particularly interesting, detailing the castle's evolution from a medieval fortress to a symbol of cultural pride.
The Tower Climbing the Watchtower was a highlight, as it offered a 360-degree panoramic view of Ljubljana. The climb was a bit of a workout, but the reward at the top was well worth the effort.
The Puppet Museum An unexpected delight was the Puppet Museum. It showcased a whimsical collection that was a hit with both children and adults alike, adding a touch of playfulness to the historical site.
The Café The castle's café was a great spot to relax and enjoy a coffee or a light meal. The outdoor seating area provided a serene setting to take in the views and reflect on the visit.

Read moreA symbol of the city, worth visiting. You can approach the castle by foot, but it's a steep road, or by the funicular, which costs 3+ for one way tour or 6 euros with return included. We used the funicular. However, one way ticket should be good enough, since the returning to the city is a 7min walk.
Most of the castle is free: you can enter most of the rooms and have access to all open air places. The ticket, which costs 16 per person included the funicular, gives you access to the viewing tower and the muppet museum. However, the view of the city is splendid even without accessing the viewing tower (it's 2 floors higher). The history museum inside the castle isn't anything spectacular, since most of the exhibitions can also be found in the city's historical museum. Having said that, if you're travelling on a budget you won't miss much if you don't buy the ticket and you can still enjoy the castle.
We purchased an audio tour guide, which costs 4 euros. It did give somewhat more information, but the signs in each room covered pretty much what we needed. Again, you can get a quite good idea of the castle without the audio guide.
In general, it is a tourist attraction and the exhibitions don't have a flow from a history perspective. However it is worth visiting and estimate to spend at least 2 hours in you want to get a good tour around (3 if you have paid for the ticket). The space around the castle is also worth exploring: there is a nice park, benches with great view and places for a drink, even restaurants. It is probably ideal to plan finishing your visit by the time the sun is ready to set, since the sunset is quite beautiful from up the hill.
It is a popular attraction, but not too many people were visiting at the same time, so it wasn't super crowded or with long waiting queues. It's certainly a nice place to visit with children.
Note: make sure you have change, cause you'll need it if you want to use the toilete (0.50 euro...
Read moreLjubljana Castle was one of the highlights of my trip to Slovenia. Sitting on top of Castle Hill, it overlooks the whole city and offers some amazing panoramic views. I decided to take the funicular from the Old Town, which was quick and gave a nice preview of what was coming.
The castle itself is a mix of medieval and modern. Parts of it are free to walk around, but I got a ticket to explore more, including the tower and exhibitions. Climbing the Outlook Tower was worth every step—the view from the top is unbelievable, especially on a clear day when you can see the Alps in the distance.
Inside, I really enjoyed the Slovenian History Exhibition. It’s well-organized and covers everything from ancient times to Slovenia’s independence. I also tried the Virtual Castle tour, which added a cool, interactive element to the visit. There’s even a Museum of Puppetry inside, which was surprisingly interesting.
I took my time wandering through the grounds, checking out the chapel and the modern art installations scattered throughout. It’s clear that the castle isn’t just a historical site—it’s also a cultural venue with concerts, exhibits, and events happening regularly.
Before leaving, I grabbed something to eat at one of the restaurants inside the castle walls. The food was great and the setting made it even better. Sitting there, surrounded by history and views of the city, was unforgettable.
