St. George's Cathedral, located in the center of Cape Town, South Africa, stands as a magnificent tribute to both spiritual devotion and the tenacious human spirit. This Anglican cathedral is more than just a place of prayer; it is a strong symbol of resistance to apartheid as well as a stunning architectural wonder.
The notion of building an Anglican cathedral in Cape Town was originally conceived in 1827, when the Bishop of Calcutta, during a visit, emphasised the necessity for such a hallowed site. The first edifice, built in 1834 to John Skeene's design and influenced by London's St. Pancras Church, served the city for more than a decade.
With the formation of the Diocese of Cape Town in 1847, the church was raised to cathedral rank. However, as the city expanded, so did the demand for a larger, more imposing house of worship. Thus started the construction of the current cathedral in 1901, a process that lasted over eight decades.
During apartheid's harsh reign, St. George's Cathedral emerged as a symbol of hope and a safe haven for individuals seeking justice. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the city's spiritual leader at the time, used the cathedral as a platform to condemn apartheid and advocate for human rights. This unrelenting dedication to social justice won the church the enduring moniker "The People's Cathedral."
Sir Herbert Baker, the renowned South African architect, designed the cathedral, which is a remarkable example of Neo-Gothic architecture. Its lofty spires, elaborate stained glass windows, and pointed arches inspire awe and devotion. Baker, known for his work on countless landmark structures in South Africa, gave the cathedral a timeless beauty that has charmed...
Read moreI visited the church today only to see a sign inside the church saying “Zionism is racism” with a Palestinian groups name below it. I asked one of the people working for there why that sign was in the house of God. He said because they stand in solidarity with Palestine. I then asked him why Zionism is racist. He could not answer me. I then asked him if he knew what the the Palestinians say about the Jews and how Palestine as a people call for the destruction of God’s chosen people.
I find that any church who stands in solidarity against Israel with a people who openly call for the destruction of Israel are false teachers and act in fact against the Word of God.
Zionism is the desire to form a Jewish state. God Himself called for the formation of this Jewish state when He promised Abraham that He would give him all the land of Canaan as an EVERLASTING inheritance. If you as a church don’t even know the very basic of your Bible and curse Israel by standing with their enemies, then you are walking on a road that is leading you astray.
If you truly follow God and want Him to bless your church, you will stop with the propaganda and puppeteering and remove that sign. You as church leaders will be held to account for your...
