Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe had a 3.30pm lupper at Hassar a few days before Christmas 2024. We wanted to avoid main mealtimes as we felt it would be overly busy, and the timing was perfect, the restaurant was only a third full, with the last of the lunch folk leaving when we got there.
Every person at the table thought their meal was the superior meal. Mine was the burger, with feta and bacon, and I'd insist it was definitely the best - with the meat cooked to perfection at rare or next to rare (they ask you exactly how you want it, and that's exactly how I got it). Yum. My American vegetarian friend was super impressed with her veg meal, especially given the restaurant is essentially a meat place. She said outside of LA and NYC your meat-free meal choices in the USA are nowhere near as good as those offered in South Africa (apparently even at a dedicated grill venue). The only slight food let-down was the brownie we ordered for pudding was a bit dry, despite arriving attractively presented and with a scoop of delicious vanilla-flecked ice-cream.
Our waitress was attentive without being intrusive and the coffees were good, but the chocolate cocktail drink thing we were served at the end of our meal was DECADENTLY DELECTABLE! What a treat!
Our table was outside, so a little noisy, but not so we couldn't hear each other, and we couldn't hear other tables, so the atmosphere suited us just fine.
Would highly recommend this place for a reliably delicious, easy late lunch/lupper (or probably any meal of the day, presumably). Prices are reasonable, especially given the quality of the food and the location. If you are visiting Cape Town, this spot is a winner, and you can walk off the chocolate calories on the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIāve been here a couple of times and keep coming back for one reason: the food is excellent.
Came in for lunch and was seated in the small lounge area on the right, next to the entrance and close to the bar a lovely spot with views of the seaside.
Now⦠the service. The staff are nice, polite, smiley, all the basics are there. But once they seat you⦠itās like you disappear. Iām not sure if theyāre understaffed, undercaffeinated, or just on airplane mode, but takes forever to get a noticed.
I ordered the 400g rib eye (medium rare, fries ), and let me tell you: it was a religious experience. Cooked to perfection. 10/10. Would write a poem about it. For dessert, I had the Death by Chocolate cake⦠absolutely mental. Iām not even a chocolate person, and I still have to say itās the best chocolate cake Iāve ever had. Paired with the ice cream? Just the perfect touch.
But back to the service. I was dining solo, so I started clocking how long it took for someone to notice me. 12 minutes. Twelve. Since I sat till I left, two hours. I wasnāt in a rush, so I threw on a Netflix movie and just went with it.
Finished my food, asked for a glass of tap water and the bill another wait. Eventually I gave up and paid at the bar. Didnāt tip, not out of spite, just⦠if I have to walk myself to the bar to pay, thatās where I draw the line.
Cue: the barman giving me the look. Like Iād just insulted him or something. Get a grip . Tips are earned, not demanded. Iām already paying for the meal, Iāll happily tip when the service matches the quality of the food.
Anyway, Iāll still come back because that steak? Unreal. But unless the service picks up, the tip jar stays empty....
