Ground Seoul — Attraction in Seoul

We came in to see REAL BANKSY. It is located at B4 level and requires some fitness level to climb 4 flights up.

The problem I have is I got sick and started to sneeze from the dirty air conditioning in the 1st room and had become sicker for days now. The air of the area was wet and moldy. It smelled like a wet floor mop. I think they should clean their HVAC unit or duct system ASAP.

Other than the poor air quality sickening me, the show is well put, other than the questionable authenticity and credit of the entire display works and sale goods locally made by this host, especially when they sell $140 hooded shirts and other printed goods with BANKSY name on them, but I don't find the authentification symbol from the artist. And none of the profits would go to Banksy, the artist, in this way.

The street art is becoming high profit opportunity. They conflict the whole concept of his works, placed in the public relms. This part has not been well figured out with this exhibition. But the young visitors don't seem to care. The whole world comes down to if it was SNS Worthy.

I went to this museum over the weekend and it was empty. It was really strange. I walked in and there was music playing and a small sign on the reception desk that the attendant had taken a break and to call the listed number. I called and unfortunately the person on the other line could only speak Korean.

I heard some people talking from somewhere else in the building so I walked each floor all the way to the 5th and found a local calligraphy group and they told me the museum part of the building has closed. I peaked in the exhibition rooms to be sure and they were gutted.

There are no signs to indicate the museum's closing so I hope my post can save someone an afternoon...

아라아트센터를 개관하며

아라아트센터는 한국 예술문화의 중심지인 서울 인사동에서 다양한 전시를 통해 대중예술의 가치를 높이고 보다 창의적인 전시를 선도하고자 태어난 복합 문화 공간입니다.

아라아트센터는 전시, 공연, 이벤트, 파티 등이 동시에 어우러지는 복합문화공간으로 인사동의 문화산업 창출과 관광벨트 형성에 기여하고자 합니다. 인사동과 함께 뒤로는 북촌, 앞으로는 청계천으로 이어지는 문화벨트를 형성하고 유기적인 문화공간으로 확장시켜 한국 관광산업의 콘텐츠를 더욱 풍부하게 만드는 결과를 이끌어 낼 것입니다.

‘아라’의 의미

‘아라’는 순우리말로, ‘물, 바다’를 뜻하는 옛말로 모든 생명의 어머니인 바다처럼 한국 미술계를 든든히 뒷받침하려는 의지와 포용성을 담은 명칭입니다. 아시아 및 한국의 현대미술은 현재 국제미술사회에서 점차 주목 받고 있으며, 아라아트센터는 한국 현대미술을 세계에 알리고 국내 최대 전시공간을 통해 그 흐름과 맥락을 같이하고자 합니다.

‘아라아트센터’ 건축

아라아트센터가 위치한 인사동은 한국 최대의 도시 서울의 중심이며, 문화의 거리로서 수많은 유동인구와 문화 이벤트가 벌어지는 공간입니다.

아라아트센터는 한국 최대의 문화 중심지, 그 가운데 위치함으로써 높은 수준의 문화예술을 보급하는 데 크게 유리한 입지적 조건을 갖추었습니다. 아라아트센터를 중심으로 인사동 일대에 산재한 문화예술 공간들은 시너지 효과를 누릴 수 있으며, 이 시너지 효과는 다시 아라아트센터의 에너지로 재흡수 되는 선순환(善循環) 구조를 이룰 것입니다.

아라아트센터는 전시장 평균높이 3.5m이며 최대 14m로 폭넓은 예술장르를 수용할 수 있습니다. 특히 지하 4개 층을 관통하는 자연채광(自然採光)의 아름다움은 전시되는 작품들을 한층 돋보이게 하고 풍부한 분위기를 연출할 수 있습니다.

아라아트센터의 하드웨어라고 할 수 있는 건물은 콘크리트와 유리로 이루어져 있습니다. 콘크리트의 검은 색은 물을 상징하며, 유리의 빛은 곧 아침 바다의 여명(黎明)을 뜻합니다.

문화와 문명이 조화를 이루는 것처럼, 아라아트센터도 한국 미술문화의 모든 것을 닦아 내고 창조해 내는 공간으로서 임무를 자임하며, 이를 건물의 재질과 외양으로도 보여주고 있습니다.

‘아라아트센터’ 1차년도 전시운영 계획

‘예술은 자신의 사라짐 이후에도 살아있는 모든 것의 패러다임이 된다. – 쟝 보드리야르’

역사적 사건은 시대의 중심에 대한 의미있는 혁명을 통해 새로운 가치를 만들어왔고, 시간과 함께, 사람과 함께 이 ‘새로움’을 그 사회의 ‘익숙한’가치로 성장시키며 그들만이 가진 ‘정체성’으로 진화시켜 왔습니다. 지역성(Locality)은 그 도시를 구성하고 있는 사회의 삶이 시간과 함께 만든 위대한 유산이며, 그 사회가 가지고 있는 예술의 본질적 가치를 담고 있는 가장 중요한 흔적들입니다.

우리의 수평적 시각은 인간, 시간, 공간이라는 3가지 관점이 어떻게 예술을 통해 지역의 정체성을 만들게 되었으며, 지금 그들은 어떠한 예술적 가치를 만들어 가고 있는가를 바라보고자합니다. ‘지금’, ‘여기에서’ 우리가 경험하지 못한 지구 반대편의 사회가 보여주는 ‘익숙한’ 예술의 현장을 만나는 것은 미술사에 대한 ‘인식의 혁명’이며 ‘중심의 이동’을 의미하는 ‘새로운’ 가능성을...
