Aug. 2021 박대성 전 It was truly inspirational! The scale and energy of the master’s work were unreal. The Zen-inspired elements, combined with vibrant colors though mostly black, left a lasting impression—I even got goosebumps.
The solo exhibition titled Jeonggwanjadeuk at Insa Art Center in Gwanhun-dong, Jongno-gu, was a comprehensive display of the artist’s vast body of work. The title of the exhibition, meaning "attaining truth through calm observation," encapsulated the essence of the show. It invited viewers to reflect on the artist’s previous themes while offering fresh perspectives through new pieces.
What stood out to me was how seamlessly the Zen concepts were woven into the visual language. The balance of color and form created a meditative experience, where each piece felt alive, yet grounded in tranquility. Front desk couldn’t answer basic questions like how much a particular artwork was going for and what the red dot sticker meant on the label. Still no answer on the price after phone call with their manager, but did inform me the red dot meant sold, which can be important for potential buyers you would think. The walls looked patchy as they didn’t do a good job repainting from previous exhibits. Exhibits can benefit from more space to breathe. But the work itself is fascinating and made me think and laugh, so I rate it as an average...
