Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Helga de Alvear — Attraction in Cáceres

I am very conflicted on how to rate this museum.

The good: the building is beautiful, the entrance is free and there are plenty of artworks to see: some from the modern times and most from contemporary artists. Texts to the artworks available in Spanish and English.

The confusing: I really don’t know what to say about many of the art works. Some were scribbles and some were just monochrome panels. Some make sense when you read the explanations to them, but for others the understanding gets further out of reach the more you think about them.

I left the museum feeling cold and alienated from a lot of what I saw. However, taste is subjective, so go and see...

This place was impressive for its size. There are several floors of art to see. Most of it didn't "wow" me, but overall, I would say it's a 4-star experience. Admission is free, so be sure to go when you are in town. They have a permanent collection and a temporary collection. Sin duda un referente cultural para la ciudad y una atracción de primer orden para sus visitantes. La colección es el resultado de combinar emoción y conocimiento; una colección de colecciones que rebasa límites y fronteras, tanto formales como temporales o territoriales, y cuyo denominador común es la pasión por el arte contemporáneo. Con más de 3.000 obras de arte y la presencia de más de 500 artistas de los cinco continentes, constituye una familia numerosa y plural de obras de arte en constante transformación, que sigue creciendo en la actualidad con nuevas incorporaciones cada año. La mayor parte de las obras que la componen fueron ejecutadas desde la segunda mitad del siglo XX hasta la actualidad, reflejando así un carácter absolutamente contemporáneo. Pero si se establece una definición puramente temporal, la colección da comienzo a finales del siglo XVIII con un artista adelantando a su tiempo, el cual se propone como el auténtico primer artista contemporáneo: Francisco de Goya. La obra del pintor español, y especialmente su obra Los Caprichos, ha servido como referente para muchos de los artistas vivos, que han encontrado en este pionero maestro temáticas y formas de sorprendente actualidad para leer nuestro presente.
