The best open space in Madrid, full of life, history little gift shops, bars, restaurants and culture. One cannot be in Madrid and not visit this marvelous place. The oldest restaurant in the Guiness Books of Records is just a few minutes away-Botin. Walk around during the day to explore all it has to offer or walk at night as the Plaza Mayor is illuminated in all its majestic expression. I have been coming here since I was a child and it still amazes me every time I enter through one of its four entrances. Parking is easily found underneath the plaza; parking is tight so I recommend you either practice first or rent a small car. Places to see in its surroundings; Mercado de San Miguel, Botin, El Madroño, Dulces Paco (heaven!)Plaza Major is located in the heart and the center of Madrid Old Town, The rectangular Plaza was built in the 16th century and witnessed many renovation works along its long history. In the center of the square rises a statue of Philip IIlI on his horse. On one side of the square you can see the façade Casa de la Panaderia (Bakery House) with its painted murals. The square has ten entrances and it is off limit for car traffic. Today, Casa Major hosts the Christmas tree and some seasonal open air markets are organized there. More than 270 balconies overlook the square. Some of them belong to residential apartment and some for office spaces. many cafes and restaurants occupy the ground floor. Sometimes the feeling you get here reminds you of St, Marco Square in Venice. Visiting Plaza major is a must when you are in Madrid. From here you can start exploring old Madrid. The best open space in Madrid, full of life, history little gift shops, bars, restaurants and culture. There were a few people dressed up in costumes waiting for tourists but it's not as bad as an other cities and it didn't seem that it's a problem for the locals either. The whole place is very clean and when I visited in late September it wasn't all too crowded eitherPlaza Mayor is a large public outdoor space the heart of Madrid. This Square was built during the reign of Phillip III in 1580-1619. The Plaza Mayor is a space for tourists and locals to shop walk around eat and just enjoy the outdoors. In the middle of the square there is a statue of Phillip III sitting on a horse. There is also elite of tables and chairs to sit at and eat or just enjoy the outdoors. Here are some interesting tidbits about Plaza Mayor in Madrid: Former Marketplace: Originally a marketplace in the 16th century, it transformed into a grand public square during the reign of King Philip III. Royal Balcony: Look for the Casa de la Panadería, a building with a frescoed facade. It boasts a balcony where King Philip IV would watch public events. Fire Survivor: The Plaza Mayor has endured three major fires throughout its history. Austere History: The square witnessed everything from public celebrations and bullfights to executions and somber religious acts like autos-da-fé. Christmas Cheer: Today, the Plaza Mayor is a festive spot, especially during Christmas when it transforms into a bustling Christmas market. The Plaza Mayor is lined with shops and restaurants under the arcades lining the square. While the selection here leans towards tourists, you can find a variety of options: * Souvenir Shops: Find typical Spanish souvenirs like flamenco dresses, castanets, and fans. * Ham Shops: Sample and purchase Spain's famous cured ham, jamón ibérico. * Restaurants: Take a seat at a restaurant with outdoor terraces and enjoy classic Spanish dishes like cocido madrileño (chickpea stew) or paella. * Cafeterias: Grab a coffee and a pastry for a quick breakfast or snack. It's important to note that some establishments in Plaza Mayor may have slightly higher prices due to the prime location.

Plaza Mayor is undeniably a stunning location in the heart of the city, boasting architectural beauty and historical significance. Surrounded by iconic buildings and adorned with intricate details, it offers a picturesque setting for visitors to soak in the charm of the area. However, it's important to exercise caution while exploring this popular spot. While Plaza Mayor is a hub of activity and attracts tourists and locals alike, it's essential to be aware of common scams and inconveniences that can detract from the experience. Classic scams such as the bracelet scam, where individuals approach tourists to sell trinkets aggressively, can be encountered here. Additionally, the presence of vomit on the ground and the risk of pickpocketing serve as reminders to stay vigilant and safeguard belongings. Despite these concerns, Plaza Mayor remains in close proximity to many other interesting attractions, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the city. From historic landmarks to cultural hotspots, there's no shortage of places to visit and experiences to enjoy nearby. Plaza Mayor offers a visually captivating environment and convenient access to various attractions, visitors should remain cautious and attentive to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
