Relaxed, exciting, vibrant, old and new, a city of contradictions. Visit the city of arts and sciences with its futuristic buildings housing an oceanographic, science museum and opera house. Take a 30 minute walk along the old river bed (diverted after the city flooded) and look for the follies along the way. they include Roman temples, gulliver tied down as a childrens play area, and a variety of parks. Sundays are particularly good worth the parks full of free activities. At the end turn left into he old city by the gates and work your way through. Make sure to climb the gates for the views, spot the bat on the crown in the centre of the town hall. Look across the plaza ayuntamiento to the correos and its stunning architecture before viewing the bull ring (not a fan of the sport) then walk through to the cathedral and view the Holy Grail (yes its there) then enjoy a meal, drinks and watching the world go by in plaza de la virgins perhaps watching the water courts near to the fountain of Neptune. There is much more to see and make sure you get away from the city centre into plaza negrito for drinks and cool music in radio city (book in advance locals love it). There is so much more to the city. Go, enjoy, return and enjoy some more

During my recent trip to Valencia, I had the opportunity to visit the iconic Valencia Cathedral. While the cathedral itself was undoubtedly interesting and impressive, the €9 admission fee seemed somewhat steep, especially since the building wasn't significantly more remarkable than other cathedrals or churches I've visited. As a non-religious person, I was still captivated by the stunning frescoes, intricate icons, and majestic statues throughout the cathedral. The architecture and historical context were noteworthy, adding depth to the overall experience. My main interest, however, was the 'Holy Grail,' believed to be the cup from which Jesus drank. Unfortunately, the artifact was tucked away in a small, dimly lit room and displayed in a dark case, making it difficult to see clearly. The room was under renovation, which made it challenging to appreciate the artifact in a serene setting. Furthermore, there was a lack of information or indication about the Holy Grail's significance, aside from a lengthy audio tour that included unnecessary chanting. In summary, the Valencia Cathedral is an interesting place to visit with its impressive architectural and historical elements. However, my expectations regarding the Holy Grail were not entirely met, and the €9 fee seems excessive for visiting what I perceive to be a public church. If you're in Valencia, it's worth a visit, but be prepared for the admission price and potentially underwhelming display of the Holy Grail.

This church was beautiful, unfortunately an entrance price, but maybe that’s a good thing to keep the big crowds outside…. Some history of this church . Despite Spain being known as a Christian country, this was not always the case. For 525 years, Valencia had Islam as its main religion and Arabic as its main language. The name of Valencia changed to Balansiya. The Muslims soon had the Basilica of Valencia demolished to build a mosque. On October 9, 1238, Valencia was conquered by the Christian king Jaime I. For 34 years, the old mosque remained in use as a church! In 1262, the mosque finally disappeared and the first stone of the current cathedral of Valencia was laid. The Valencians carried out the construction of the cathedral in six phases, between 1262 and the second half of the 18th century. For example, in 1381 the construction of the bell tower, El Micalet, began, which lasted a total of 44 years. At that time, the cathedral was somewhat smaller than it is today, and the tower was therefore separate from the church! It was not until 35 years later that the connection between the two buildings was made.

La Catedral de Valencia was a great visit, an incredible 11th century building located in the heart of Valencia. The ticket costs 9€ which to me is a good deal considering this includes the audio guide (available in various languages) and that the cathedral also has a museum section and underground section to explore as part of the tour. I would also recommend climbing the tower after finishing in the church. The tower can be climbed with a seperate ticket using a different entry way to visitors to the main cathedral. The ticket costs 2.5€ and allows panoramic views of the square below and around the rest of the city. Be wary that there is one one narrow staircase leading up and down the top of the tower and that there is usually about 10 minutes of people climbing followed by 10 minutes of descending. Be aware that if you miss the first or second descent you could be stuck at the top of the tower for an additional 10 (or so) minutes. This may not be so fun during the middle of summer if there is no breeze.
