I wanted to like this place, which has some good reviews and an attractive facade. My sixteen year old son and I had just arrived in Valencia for a weeklong visit. We checked into our hotel in the early evening, after a long train ride, and eagerly headed out for a first gelato in the midst of the city's vibrancy. Only after we'd been handed the small cones I ordered did I discover that they only took cash. I hadn't noticed any such sign and had grown accustomed to using my card everywhere in Barcelona. Of course I usually carried some cash but as we'd arrived late, I didn't. I was mortified and apologized profusely in a Spanish-English blend. The proprietess was displeased and insisted we immediately walk to a bank machine, which was a 10-minute walk away since the streets were quite crowded and I wasn't oriented to the city. I agreed to do this. I was flustered and embarassed. I explained the situation to my son, and we proceeded to leave on the cash-finding mission. She then requested that one of us stay in the shop while the other went to the machine, treating us as if we were a couple of delinquents determined to rip her off. Mystifyingly in retrospect, I complied, and asked my son to wait for me. In retrospect, how I wish I'd handed the cones back, apologized for failing to have cash and simply walked out. I attribute my failure to do this to exhaustion, bewilderment, wanting to rectify my mistake straightaway. My son and I felt terribly uncomfortable, and the experience left a bitter aftertaste. I would've only gladly returned the following day with the euros to cover our two small cones! I can't critique the gelato as I tasted nothing as I frantically navigated the route to the cash machine and back. I've never had an experience quite as discomfitting as this one. For me, well-made gelato must be paired with a welcoming vibe for me to recommend a place. All of our other experiences in Valencia were overwhelmingly positive, and we found so much to...
Read moreThe two times I had gelato here provided polar opposite experiences. And the non-negative experience of the first time is the reason for the two stars. The first time was a hot Sunday afternoon. I had just arrived at Valencia and two scoops of creamy gelato in the city center proved to be just what I needed to kick off my week. Later on in the week, I returned for a post-dinner treat. The place was busier and I got in the disorganized queue. After waiting for almost 15 minutes and having been passed over twice but two different servers for some Spanish speaking locals who had come after me, I decided to leave without ordering and to not return. I have nothing against a policy that prefers locals or customers who speak Spanish, but I would rather that the establishment makes this clear to everyone. I love gelato but not more than my dignity and frankly, the city center area is littered with fantastic gelaterias who honor...
Read moreVeneta Ice Cream in Valencia, Spain, is an absolute delight and the perfect spot to cool off on a hot afternoon. I had the Dutch chocolate, and I can confidently say it’s one of the best chocolate ice creams I’ve ever tasted. The flavor is rich, intense, and perfectly balanced—not too sweet, just pure, decadent chocolate goodness. The texture is incredibly smooth and creamy, making every bite melt in your mouth. It was the ultimate treat to beat the heat while strolling through the beautiful streets of Valencia. The shop itself has a welcoming vibe, with friendly staff and a tempting variety of flavors that make it hard to choose just one. But if you’re a chocolate lover, the Dutch chocolate is a must-try. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, Veneta Ice Cream is the kind of place you’ll want to come back to again and again. Highly...
