I have mixed feelings about the railway and systems behind it. It's a great way to sit and enjoy the scenery from Columbo to Galle, but that's if you can find a seat. I went the previous day hoping to buy a ticket early that would guarantee a seat. but 1st class wasn't operational and they told me I couldn't buy tickets in advance. So the next day I went an hour early, got tickets and we waited on the platform for an hour to make sure we got a seat. As the train rolled in its every man, woman, child, baby for himself, and the train was already fully loaded. So even if you go early it doesn't mean you are guaranteed a seat. So I stood the entire trip ( which isn't bad in itself, I don't mind standing ) but I didn't see any sights as the train is so jam packed all you see is the back of the head of the guy in front of you. I'd suggest just taking a taxi, yes it's much more expensive, but if you want to see out side a window and anything more than the back of some guys head then those are your options. Also the train waits for about 20 min before it pulls away, so that's 20 minutes in a super hot and sweaty train, no AC or a fan blowing and some people who did manage to find a seat is eating so you have this mix of seafood, curry, sweat all in this hot cabin. Only when the train started was the fans on and a breeze pulled through the train. So ultimately it's a gamble - you may find a seat, peer out the window and see beautiful sights and fresh air. Or your doomed for almost 3 hours. And that why I have mixed emotions about it - They could perhaps have 1 cabin for pre-bookings, or at least construct the way one enters the train in such a manner that if you did come an hour early that you would be able to enter first and not run over by a stampede. Bear in mind if you are a tourist you are bound to have a pack pack, those train doors are thin, and the space inside is even smaller. You only have storage space overhead, that's if you find a seat.... There is also no clear way of knowing what the next station is. If your standing you can't see out the window and see the station name. There ate also no announcements on the train. So we trusted a local girl on the train next to us to tell us what station we need to get off on. And we almost got off one too early if it wasnt for another local who stopped us. Getting off a station too early isn't going to kill you, but it just shows how they system can be improved without making massive changes. I'd say try it, an adventure is still an adventure even if it's not a pleasant experience. It's only 3 hours of your life. I'm sitting in Galle typing this now, and we are planning to take the train back to Columbo hoping there is less people travelling from this side and that there will be space, or at least an open window , but you just don't know.............

The Fort Railway Station in Sri Lanka is one of the country's major transportation hubs and serves as a gateway to the city of Colombo and other parts of the island. Here's a review of the station: Pros: 1. Central Location: The Fort Railway Station is strategically located in the heart of Colombo, making it easily accessible from various parts of the city. Its central location makes it a convenient starting point for travelers exploring Colombo or heading to other destinations in Sri Lanka. 2. Historical Charm: The station boasts a rich history and displays some impressive colonial-era architecture. For history enthusiasts, this adds a touch of charm and nostalgia to the travel experience. 3. Connectivity: The station offers extensive connectivity with trains departing and arriving from various parts of the country. Whether you're heading to the cultural triangle in the north, the scenic hill country, or the beautiful beaches in the south, the Fort Railway Station can connect you to your destination. 4. Budget-Friendly: Traveling by train is generally more budget-friendly compared to other transportation options, such as private taxis or buses. This makes the Fort Railway Station an attractive choice for budget-conscious travelers. Cons: 1. Crowded and Hectic: Due to its central location and the large number of commuters and travelers passing through, the Fort Railway Station can get quite crowded and chaotic during peak hours. This can make navigation and finding your platform a bit overwhelming, especially for first-time visitors. 2. Limited Facilities: While the station serves its primary purpose of transportation, it may lack certain modern amenities found in more advanced transportation hubs. Facilities like clean restrooms, ample seating, and food options may be limited. 3. Maintenance: Depending on the time of your visit, you may find that certain areas of the station require maintenance or improvement. Maintenance standards may vary, and some parts of the station might be showing signs of wear and tear. 4. Security Concerns: Like any busy transportation hub, there might be security concerns, especially related to pickpocketing and petty theft. Travelers should stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their belongings. Overall, the Fort Railway Station is an essential transportation hub in Sri Lanka and serves its purpose of connecting travelers to various destinations across the country. While it may have its shortcomings, the station's historical significance and connectivity options make it an integral part of Sri Lanka's travel infrastructure. If you plan to use the station, arriving early and being prepared for the crowds will help ensure a smoother experience.

It's a very historic train station. The middle platforms can be very dark. Try to use your hotel's toilets before coming here. For the expo train and other intercity trains, you'll need to collect your tickets at the outside ticket offices. When you have a few of them in a tiny room, it can get crowded in the tickets office. The expo rail to Kandy left on time at 7am. Arrived there almost on time. Left kandy on time as well. So, you can say I'm pretty impressed. My seat 5D was on the right side of the train and for over an hour, I had the sun shining into our sides and it can get hot. That seat too has an auto (not voluntary) recliner so every 10-15 minutes I'll have the passenger behind, knee me. 5D also has a partial window but when it reclined, you'll get a full view :) On the way back, I was on 7D but this time, the train was going "backwards" but at least there's a full window without the auto reclining function. Both journeys came with snacks (doesn't make a difference if you ordered veg or non-veg), a bottle of water and later, hot drinks. I avoided the hot drinks cos the train was very shaky.

Fort Railway Station in Colombo, Sri Lanka, stands as a bustling hub of activity and a vital part of the city's transport network. As the primary railway station in Colombo, it connects the city with various parts of the country, including major destinations such as Kandy, Galle, and Jaffna. Here's a detailed review of its features, facilities, and overall experience.

Location and Accessibility: Fort Railway Station enjoys a strategic location in the heart of Colombo, making it easily accessible by public transport, tuk-tuks, and private vehicles. Its proximity to major landmarks like the World Trade Center and Pettah Market adds to its convenience.

Architecture and Ambience: The station's colonial-era architecture reflects Sri Lanka's rich history, featuring large arched windows, high ceilings, and a spacious main hall. While the station exudes a certain old-world charm, some parts of the infrastructure are showing signs of wear and could benefit from renovations to enhance passenger comfort.

Facilities: Fort Railway Station offers a range of facilities, though they vary in quality. The ticket counters are generally efficient, but during peak hours, long queues can form, necessitating some patience. The waiting areas are basic, with limited seating and amenities. There are restrooms, but their cleanliness can be inconsistent.

Services: The station is a hub for several intercity and commuter trains, providing a comprehensive timetable that caters to a variety of travel needs. Announcements are made in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, ensuring that most passengers can understand important information. However, train delays are not uncommon, so it's advisable to check schedules in advance and be prepared for potential wait times.

Food and Shopping: Inside the station, there are a few food stalls and vendors selling snacks, drinks, and local delicacies. While the selection is not extensive, it provides basic sustenance for travelers. Additionally, nearby shops and eateries in the Fort area offer more dining options for those with time to spare before their journey.

Safety and Cleanliness: Safety is generally well-maintained with visible security personnel patrolling the station. However, the level of cleanliness can vary, especially in high-traffic areas and restrooms. Efforts to improve waste management and regular cleaning schedules could enhance the overall experience...
