A bear pit was historically used to display bears, typically for entertainment and especially bear-baiting. The pit area was normally surrounded by a high fence, above which the spectators would look down on the bears.

Visited the Barenpark in July 2019 and it was an incredible experience. The bears are absolutely gorgeous and it was so wonderful to see them up close. I fell in love with them straight away. You can reach the Barenpark by taking bus 12 (Direction towards Paul Klee Centre) and its a few stops. The bus counts down and lists the names of places so you won't miss your stop. Worth it as walking there is quite a walk but you can take your time walking through the old town on the way back. When you arrive there is a pit and the biggest bear came onto the rock so I was able to get a very good view and another bear was by one of the flaps to their house. The bears do have plenty of space as their little flaps lead to their forest style walkway haven on the hill where they have paths/logs and trees to shade from the sun and at the bottom is a place where they can swim and keep cool. You can take the Lift funicular which transports you to the bottom of the hill where you can see the bears swimming. I was so lucky whilst I was here I got to see ALL three bears swimming and basking in the water. It was so nice to see them up close and watch them forage for food and keep cool. There is plenty of space for everyone to see them and take turns watching the bears and taking photos. Definitely pay a visit to the famous bears of Bern when you visit. They are absolutely beautiful!

Visiting the Bear Pit at Fosse aux Ours was a delightful experience! The setting is both beautiful and serene, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature. The bear pit itself is well-designed, allowing for a close-up view of these magnificent animals in a safe and respectful environment. It’s clear that the caretakers prioritize the well-being of the bears, providing them with ample space and enrichment. Watching the bears play and interact was a highlight of my visit. The informative displays nearby educate visitors about bear conservation and the importance of protecting their natural habitats. The staff were friendly and eager to share their knowledge, enhancing the overall experience. Whether you’re an animal lover or just looking for a unique outing, the Bear Pit at Fosse aux Ours is definitely worth a visit! It’s a wonderful way to connect with nature and learn about these incredible creatures.

Since 1513, bears have been at home in Bern until 1857 in the town itself, then in the bear pit, and since 2009, in the new and spacious bear park. The site on the banks of the Aare stretches from the former bear pit opposite the Old Town to the river. Thanks to a lift, the entire facility is now wheelchair-friendly. The “Bear Pit”, which still exists and has been listed as a federal cultural asset of national significance, remains at the bears' disposal. Guests can go on a tour of the old bear pit as well as the new bear park. They get to see the new park with its green hilly terrain, which includes caves and the "Bear Bath" in the Aare River. Guided tours can also be booked during which you learn plenty of interesting things concerning the history of the bear park - a peek behind the scenes. Experience like locals, sit around the banks, and soak your feet down the water which really memorable.

“Bears are very curious!” Indeed they are. They were pretty cute and docile looking at them from the top. There were 3 bears wandering around the pit and perhaps it was a gloomy morning so the pit looked extra gloomy and a little unkempt. It felt a little sad thinking they only have the pit to wander around in but I was told by a Swiss friend that they are taken around or they’ve got access to the tunnels/water. Along with that, I saw other spaces that were closed off like enclosures, I can only assume that that’s also for the bears to roam. The Bear Pit is located at the end of the Old Town and is a 30mins walk away from the train station. If you’re in the neighbourhood, definitely stop by to see if any bears are around! Though I would suggest that the city looks at refreshing, cleaning up the best pit so that it looks a little less sad and barren.
