Ah, Bern, Bern! City of bears, clocks, and... drumroll... this delightful café! I, your humble servant, Tony, a man who seems to have eaten everything on this planet (and believe me, I know what I'm talking about!), simply must share my delight. You know, usually when they say "traditional Swiss food," you imagine something heavy, cheesy, and kind of... well, you know, "to survive in the mountains." But this café! It's like a portal to a gastronomic paradise straight out of a Swiss fairy tale! The fondue? Oh, my dear, it's not just melted cheese! It's a symphony of flavors where every note is perfectly balanced. The bread for dipping? Soft, fresh, it's like elves bake it somewhere in the Alps! And the aroma... Good heavens, that aroma could wake a bear from hibernation and make it yodel! The Rösti? Forget everything you've tried before! These golden potato pancakes are so crispy on the outside and tender on the inside that it feels like angels serenade them while they're cooking. I almost shed a tear of happiness when I took the first bite. Honestly! And their sausages! Mmmm... Juicy, fragrant, with so many spices that it feels like all the wisdom of Swiss shepherds is contained within them. I was ready to eat them all, down to the last one! And believe me, I tried! The service? Well, there are simply no words! The waiters fly between tables like mountain goats, always with a smile and ready to fulfill your every whim. I even thought one waitress winked at me when I ordered my third portion of rösti. Or was it just a sunbeam? No matter! The atmosphere? Cozy, warm, homey. It feels like you've come to visit a very hospitable gnome who loves to cook. Wooden beams, cute little curtains, the smell of fresh pastries... You want to stay here forever and tell your grandchildren legends about this magical place. In short, if you find yourself in Bern and want to try real Swiss cuisine, and also get a boost of great mood, run here immediately! You're welcome. Just enjoy. And say hello to that charming gnome-chef from Tony, a big fan of his culinary masterpieces! P.S. I'm seriously considering moving to Bern just for this café. That's how much it...
Read moreThe Altes Tramdepot buildin was originally used to store tram cars, but has since been repurposed into a restaurant, cafe and tourism shop. There is a convenient pay parking lot just north across the street, and public transportation is a good option too. Just next door is the famous Barengraben outdoor exhibit of Bern’s eponymous animals. The beloved live bears are a notable tourist attraction, and there is a nice walkway down to the bank of the Aare River. The Altes Tramdepot Brauerei & Restaurant has a two-sided wooden bar immediately inside. The bar has about 20 wooden stools, and in the center behind the bar is their open brewhouse, which consists of two shiny copper brewing vessels on a brick mezzanine. The high gabled wood beam ceiling overhead is a pretty sight, and hanging chalkboards list their 5 house beers on tap. The several short stainless steel fermenters and stacks of horizontal bright tanks are visible downstairs through a windowed wall. The size of the brewery indicates a steady stream of customers. I was impressed at the excellent quality of their beer, which is available by sampler flight or full pour. My favorite was their seasonal Milk Stout, but their year-round core beers are very good too. Past the bar area is the windowed kitchen on the left and a large dining area on the right. Their full service kitchen offers a typical brewpub restaurant menu, and they pride themselves on their Flammkuchen flatbreads. Outside is a scenic patio area with plenty of tables overlooking the River to Bern. The staff is welcoming, prompt, and very helpful. This brewpub has a great atmosphere, good service and tasting beer. I consider it a must-visit...
Read moreReally cool brewery restaurant right beside the bear park in Bern in a repurposed tram depot. The beer is brewed on site, and the quality shows from the very first sip. We drank the helles, and it was very refreshing after a long day of sightseeing. We didn’t have a reservation, so we were able to start with a drink at the bar, but didn’t have to wait long before being seated on a beautiful wooden table out in the biergarten.
The views of the city after the sun went down were fantastic and kept us entertained as we waited for our food to arrive. The only downside was that my wife’s food came out way earlier than mine, so she was able to finish before I even began. There was quite a lot of people there, so I can imagine it was busy for the kitchen. Just good to keep in mind if you’re going on a busy evening.
For food, we tried a vegetable flammkuchen, which was very nicely done with a light, thin crust. The vegetables were perfectly cooked. I ordered the rosti, which was very tasty when it finally arrived. It was everything I had hoped for (first time trying one). You wouldn’t guess by looking at it in the small cast iron pan in which it’s served, but it was quite filling. Would certainly recommend it.
All in all a...
