Great place to spend an hour and explore with the family. The gorge is situated 15 minutes from Zermatt town centre, is fairly cheap and is well signposted. Prepare for unsteady ground however, as the path up to the gorge can be steep and uneven, but if you're used to hiking this shouldn't be a problem.
The gorge can be entered from two sides, although most people coming from the town centre will come from the south side.
To enter the gorge, pay at the reception hut either at the beginning of your walk or at the end (depending on which way you enter). You can pay in either francs or euros.
The gorge itself has several connecting walkways for onlookers to walk along and see the natural features from a safe distance. These walkways are well maintained and very safe, although at times the steps can be steep and passing points may occasionally be narrow. Despite this they are easy to get around and most people should be able to make the journey.
The views are beautiful and if you go at the right time of year the water will be a beautiful turquoise colour. Also, when the sun is shining the spray from the waterfalls can often create an interesting rainbow effect.
At the end of the walkway there are a few small benches where a couple or small group could potentially enjoy a little picnic.
Lastly, if one enters from the town they have the option to either continue around from the gorge for a short hike back to the town. The other alternative is to walk back along the walkways and return the...
Read moreVisited in late June 2019. Went to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn and walk around the town (nice but pretty commercial near train station, some cool old areas) and decided to make the walk out to Gorner Gorge. About a 15 - 20 minute walk from town. A bit uphill and then a short steeper climb at the end to get to entrance (lower one anyway). Walk there is mostly along the river and in view of the Matterhorn so not bad. Paid our 5 francs (dollars) each and took the walk thru the gorge on a wooden boardwalk attached to the walls of the gorge. Pretty easy walk and pretty cool and worth it for 5 dollars each. Was nice as well since it was a warm day and nice and cool on the walk. Takes maybe 15 minutes or so each way. Can exit at the end but we decided to go back to entrance since we knew the way back to town from there. Person at ticket office said the walkway had just been redone in the last few years and one can see the remains of the old railings on the walk. Was opened in the late 1800's!! Overall a solid 4 stars. Nice getting away from Zermatt and the...
Read moreWe visited here on a weekday around mid-August, and apart from us, there was maybe one other person. This allowed us to admire the breathtaking views in this awe-inspiring gorge. At the entrance, a very kind gentleman and lady explained everything to us, and after paying the reasonably priced tickets, we embarked on a lovely walk that took about 20 minutes. It led us further up and allowed for a return to the town in a loop via a different route, exiting near the Fun Park. On hot days, this place is perfect for cooling down and marveling at the multi-million-year-old gorges and shapes carved by rushing water in the rocks. The structures we walked on are safe and offer different perspectives of the gorge. If you're in Zermatt, you must definitely...
