The Si-Si (44th) South Village was the first military kindred village built in Taiwan by the KMT government in 1948 after they were defeated in the civil war in China. Most of the people who lived in the village were the military factory employees, workers and their dependants who left their homes in China and came all the way to Taiwan. At first, they intended to “temporarily stay” in the place that was the former Japenese Army 44th Arsenal because deep in mind they were determined to return to China in a couple of years only. Never did they know that the short stay lasted over 50 years! In 1978, the residents of the Si-Si (44th) South Village moved to Sansia due to the urban land consolidation. And the site is now home to Skyscraper Taipei101、Financial Centre, a shopping mall and mansions. Today, Si-Si South Village was approved historic buildings, adjacent to Xinyi Public Assembly Hall and the Cultural Park of Military Dependents' Village, which were...

44 South Village was originally Taipei's first military dependents' village. Redeveloped by the city, some buildings were demolished but there were some tires of buildings retained to exude the village ambience. One of the buildings is now the Cultural Memorial Center, a space for exhibitions and cultural events. There was an exhibition currently on as it was the 70th anniversary of Taiwan which had just past. There were many literature and photos of how Taiwan evolved from 1949 to its current situation. Very interesting knowledge and it is well worth the trip if you happen to be in Taipei...

The Xinyi community center was a village for families of soldiers in the 44th battalion. With the development of Xinyi area in the late 90s, residents moved out of their homes in 1999. This is now a landmark preserving the culture and history of 眷村 (military community) in Taiwan. While I was working in the area, we would often go the nearby cafe for lunch, or to just sit and relax in the open area. On weekends, the center hosts farmers' market, 2nd cloth exchange and other...

Located within a 5-10mins walk from taipei 101, would recommend a quick visit if you have some time to spare. Saw in google review there are items from olden days that you can look at but when we got there we couldnt find any signs of display available for viewing. However, the buildings are beautiful and photo-worthy, there's also little cafes around. Still an interesting place to visit.
