I was overall quite disappointed with my 3 weeks of training at Lamai Muay Thai Camp. Having practiced Muay Thai for around 10 years, this was my first time training in Thailand, and my expectations were not met.
There are about 5 to 8 coaches at each group training session, but once they assign an exercise, they don't move among the students to correct their techniques. They wait on the side until the time runs out before giving you another exercise. The group classes were almost all the same, with repetitive exercises, drills, and combos. As someone with a bit of experience, I expected to learn new techniques, but I didn't learn anything new. It was only basic and similar ones.
The afternoon class (5pm to 7pm) is ALWAYS EXACTLY the same, with the same coach giving always the same exercises. After less than a week, I was already getting bored with this class but continued to attend because I had already paid for 3 weeks. Yes, you will work out and sweat, but there is nothing about improving your Muay Thai acumen here.
I tried the advanced class a few times, but the coaches didnât provide any advice, feedback, or tips there either.
In 3 weeks, we did clinching only once in the normal group class! In the advanced class, there are always 2 rounds of clinching, but again, the coaches do not watch or correct you.
On the positive side, the personal training sessions are good. You can tell your coach what you want to work on, and they'll teach you some good techniques. I can't help but wonder if they intentionally withhold advice in group classes to encourage personal training sessions. The facilities are good too, with ample space, several...
Read moreLamai Muay Thai is a great gym with skilled, respectful and experienced trainers. The group classes are especially good for beginners whoâve never trained Muay Thai before. You get clear feedback, help with techniques, and the trainers are always supportive, no matter your level. For professional fighters, it might feel a bit too basic or less progress, but still a solid place for a good workout
One of the best parts is the international atmosphere. Tourists and fighters from all over the world. You always train with different partners, which helps with learning and keeps it interesting. The morning class from 7â9 AM is perfect: cooler weather, fewer people, and an energetic start to the day.
Every session begins with the trainers helping you wrap your hands. At the end, there are always a few rounds of light sparring with rotating partners. Great for applying what you learned.
There could be more bag work and variety in the group class structure, as some routines repeat daily. But overall, itâs a great experience.
If you donât have your own equipment, they provide free boxing gloves, shin and knee guards. The gym also has a own shop where you can buy your own Muay Thai gear you need.
Keep in mind that youâre on Koh Samui â a tourist island. Many people donât approach the training professionally, but rather as a cultural experience to see how real Muay Thai is trained. If youâre seriously planning to go pro and fight, youâll need a different approach: private sessions or training somewhere else in Thailand where almost no tourists are.
Highly recommended for anyone visiting Koh Samui and interested in Muay...
Read moreWhat an experience! I completed two hours of Muay Thai education. A very unique class style of training; as most gyms in Thailand are not this structured and donât actually lead a teacher to student class. Somehow Lamai has found the perfect balance of Muay Thai education and fighters training. You literally can find everything you need here- also equipped with a neighbouring strength and training facility. The teachers were serious but playful (just as in every other Muay Thai facility). They were eager to read their students and cater to everyoneâs individual level. I wouldnât hesitate to recommend this camp to beginners. As usual, I was left breathless after the series of strenuous work outs we were put through. Everything from skipping, running, knees, teeps, squats, shadow boxing, technique and sparring was completed before pad work. Pad work took the remaining life out of me. Luckily it was only two rounds long; or else I guarantee there would have been a sighting of last nights dinner; as it was slowly creeping up. Without a doubt, I know if I could commit a month or so to this camp, I would be light years closer to where Iâd like to be from a physical and technical standpoint. I was only meant to be here for 3 days but I couldnât resist extending my trip twice to make it a complete week. For me to sacrifice my time in Bangkok is a really big deal; but Lamai Muay Thai camp is undeniably worth the stay. And definitely worth another visit. Thank you to all the trainers and new friends Iâve made in my...
