İstanbul’un surları ilk olarak, Sarayburnu’nda Ligos adlı küçük köy varken inşa edilmiş ve tarih boyunca genişletilmiş. En büyük katkıları ise Roma imparatorları Konstantin ve Theodosius yapmıştır. Zaman içerisinde ihtiyaçlar çerçevesinde kapılar ve burçlar eklenmiş, yeri geldiğinde deniz tarafına da duvarlar örülmüş.

İstanbul surlarının toplam uzunluğu yaklaşık 22 – 23 kilometredir. Kara tarafında 8 km, Haliç tarafında 6 km ve deniz tarafında 9 km civarındadır. Surları baştan sona gezmiş birisi olarak şunu rahatlıkla diyebilirim: Aynı zamanda İstanbul’un simgelerinden biri olan bu surların hali, şu anda içler...
