An amazingly preserved example of a Gaol, with such lovely and helpful staff. Information is avaliable on boards in English and Welsh in each room detailing the function and stories of the inhabitants. From policemen and their families to the stories of the prisoners themselves they are fascinating. The premis of hard labour is introduced early in the visit in the information room, going over the different punishments and deterrents the gaol used, including turning handles, treadwheels and unbinding ships ropes. Examples of each can be seen inside the gaol including the giant treadwheel. There are rooms dedicated to a police station, staff living quarters, cells, workrooms, kitchens, cells of those condemned to death, the walk to the gallows, a Chapel, and an infirmary amongst others. There are talks avaliable to attend though this is something we didn't attend. We did, however, take the short walk to the Courthouse, which again is amazingly preserved and equally informative. Inside are the stories of both judges and criminals, with several interactive exhibits where you can find out the crime and seperatley the punishment. Information on transportation to Australia as punishment was particularly shocking! If you're in Beaumaris...
Read moreI’m so glad I came here, even though the information online was so sparse that I almost didn’t bother. The gaol is huge and fascinating, full of information as well as fun and engaging details targeted at younger visitors. The courthouse (located a few minutes away from the gaol) is a smaller attraction with less to see but still worth a visit, especially as the two sites share an optional combined ticket with a small saving compared to buying the two separately. The exhibits in the gaol include all variety of the former cells, kitchen facilities, governor’s quarters, as well as the rooms used for corporal punishment, religious instruction, teaching and the chapel. I can’t even recall everything I saw in order to list it, just take my word that it’s well worth it, and that you shouldn’t let the plain facade of the building mislead you into thinking it will be an...
Read moreToday as a local family of five (11-55 years) we visited Beaumaris Gaol and Court. We were greeted beautifully and introduced to our host Roger "The Governor".
Roger was just amazing, his knowledge of the history of the place was incredible and his storytelling was captivating. It is obvious that Roger has really taken time to research the archives thoroughly and with great passion to put it all together so brilliantly.
Some of the rooms were very eerie 😬 I wouldn't like to go there after dark! Particularly creepy was the mysterious rocking cradle.
We loved our tour and now have a greater understanding of our local history.
Fantastic place to visit, very highly recommended by the Roebucks Family Thank you to the staff and particularly to Roger "The...
