Ramsbottom is a typical Lancashire village town that is well worth a week day or week end visit. The main shopping area is Market Street. Not long, but there are clothes and charity shops to look at, and quit a few coffee and cafe shops.. A number of pubs and some weekends, they have market stalls and farmers markets. There is also a Tesco, a Morrisons and an Aldi. Try a trip on the ELR Steam Train in to Bury or Rawtenstall. It runs regularly. Parking is at a minimum, that is the only downside. There is a good walk in Nuttall Park, or drive just a short way and walk up to peel tower, but that is for the really energetic people as it is very hilly. My kids just adore the steam engines and even got to chat to the driver stand in the cab. Just an amazing family day out , we went from ramsbottom to Rawtenstall so just a short trip this time but I would recommend doing the long trip. Stop in ramsbottom for food and continue on your journey. I will be visiting this attraction again and again the transport museum across the road from Bolton st Bury station is also great and interactive. Was a little disgruntled that the cost for 2 adults and 3 children to return to Rawtenstall is basically the same price as a unlimited access all day for the whole line (Ā£2 difference). Not to mention that 2 of us are disabled and made literally no difference in cost either.
I must praise though, the dedication of the charity that runs the ELR. This heritage is nothing without...
