It is the best of Botanico gardens I’ve been to in the UK. I like how they carefully planted various species of plant from the same regions or from the same climate environment in one room, yet spread them out in a way to fulfill the entire space, but left a nice path between plants that fit (at least) two people to walk through. the temperature is also executed perfectly. You can feel like when you and his room it’s hotter or colder, which is so respectful because this is very beneficial for them. You can find many very famous, unique bizarre, and magnificent flowers and plants in this garden, and they will surprise you can all kinds of ways. The outdoor gardens, such as the rock garden are also quite well designed, however, some other gardens have the same plants as the one that’s in the door, so I suggest just spending enough time in a glass house so you don’t have to look at every single plant carefully that’s planted outdoors does have a beautiful lake, gorgeous sakura trees on the shore, adorable ducks and ducklings swimming in the water, and a cute fountain, and many wooden benches for resting (around the fountain). It would be best to come here when the weather is hot and less windy so you can sit on the bench to enjoy the view more peacefully. It is worth my time and I wish I spared more time, like a full two hours, so I can make sure that you have a more thorough tour of the entire garden. because it is one of the most beautiful spots...

As someone who visits botanical gardens around the world, I’ve come to see them as cultural touchstones—reflecting what each place values in nature and presentation. The Cambridge University Botanic Garden had some fascinating elements, including a tree once thought extinct, rediscovered in a remote part of China and now thriving here. The water features were serene, and the informational plaques were genuinely engaging.
However, I was surprised by the near-total lack of flowers and color. The entire garden was overwhelmingly green—top to bottom, front to back. Given England’s reputation for vibrant, whimsical gardens brimming with seasonal surprises, I expected more local flair or a Cambridge-specific interpretation of this tradition. Interestingly, the flower boxes scattered around town offered more color and variety than the garden itself.
Another disappointment: the garden declined to grant my son, who is studying at Cambridge for the summer, a student pass because he’s not enrolled full-time. That struck me as unnecessarily strict. The garden could have been a lovely place for him to relax and reflect—especially since his home campus is an arboretum, and he appreciates natural spaces.
In sum, there are some lovely features and a strong sense of history, but the experience felt a bit too constrained and monochrome for what I’ve come to expect from English...
Read moreCambridge University Botanic Garden is a very beautiful place, with an acceptable level of biodiversity. However, considering this is a garden run by one of the world’s top universities, I expected a bit more in terms of rare or unique plant collections.
The garden itself is well designed and easy to explore. I found that half a day is enough to fully walk around and enjoy the entire space at a relaxed pace. One small disappointment was the rose garden, which didn’t quite meet expectations.
On the positive side, this is a great place for families and kids. There are engaging activities that turn the visit into a fun adventure for younger visitors.
For me, the highlight of the garden was the glasshouse. I won’t spoil the experience — you should definitely visit and see the stunning diversity of plants on display there. It is by far the most brilliant part of the garden and highly recommended.
Tip: Don’t forget to bring your camera! There is so much beauty to capture, and the garden also runs a photography competition where you can test your skills.
