For complete disclosure: I'm biased due to my Grandfathers Medals being displayed in this section of the Edinburgh Castle Museum. In World War 1 a significant number of French soldiers had been cut off by the Germans and due to the telegraph lines being cut they couldn't call for assistance. My Grandfather, a Private at the time, stood on the back of his horse and reconnected the lines which allowed for the French to call for help and saved many lives. For which my Grandfather was presented the French Medaille Militaire, possibly the first non French recipient.
Later on in World War Two, 6th June 1944 - D-Day. My Grandfather was in the War Rooms with Churchill, whilst his son, my father was driving the first British Tank on to Sword beach. My fathers tank wasn't meant to be the first tank, there were two other tanks in front of him on the landing craft. Sadly the the two tanks in front of him left the landing craft and sank with the loss of all on board (as far as we know). My father said having watched this he "Shut my eyes, pushed the levers forwards and when I opened my eyes I was on the beach".
A little bit of family history.

The fees charged are not charged my the museum it’s the charge for accessing the castle . A worthwhile visit for tourists and ex regiment and...

It was interesting to see the details of the history of the Scottish dragoons, their various involvements (even during the World War), and the many aspects of this kind of warfare. For me it was one the most captivating museum...
