Great Rutland Cavern is a small cave consisting of a narrow passage and a chamber leading into the Nestus Grotto. It was first opened to the public in 1812 and was then known as Nestor Mine. It was previously mined for lead and various other minerals. Occasionally sunlight can be seen through holes in the rock, creating a pattern called 'the devil's face' Which we found out about on the internet. At the end of the tour there should be an audio visual display explaining the reality of mining in the 1800s, this was Not working, really didn't think much of the guide, or the cave, seemed to be over in 10 minutes, (would have preferred to explore by ourselves), there was one part of the cave that the guide pointed out, and that was the Roman steps, but there is no scientific evidence that Romans were even here, (plus the Romans would have done it better), this is why we are not tour guide people, they either make it good or bad, and she killed it, (the young lady at Great Masson cavern totally made the experience great) that's why we prefer to do are own research. If you go to Heights of Abraham, do the Rutland cavern first and then the Great Masson cavern, as the Masson cavern was way better, so maybe you won't feel disappointed by Great Rutland, like us.

Brilliant place to visit when exploring the Heights of Abraham. The guide on our tour was brilliant and bought the cavern to life with his stories. We had a bit flying overhead at one point in the tour which was exciting for the kids! It was uneven in places with a bit of a steep incline so wear appropriate shoes.

A great experience exploring the Great Rutland Cavern. The tour guide was friendly and very thorough when it came to unravelling it's awesome history. So much respect for the people that worked as miners with their children back then. They literally put their lives at risk to make a living.
