I've never written a bad review, but felt compelled to today. I have just returned from what was supposed to be a quiet, peaceful and happy day out with my 9 month old baby. I'd decided to take her for a walk, then get something to eat and drink on the way back from somewhere warm and friendly, as I would also be breastfeeding my baby.
It began even before I'd got out of my car, when parking up outside the 'Bank Note' pub a man appeared in the pub doorway, hands on hips, staring at me. watching me park, tutting and shaking his head. I was so off-put that I just stopped the car before I'd finished and asked if there was any problem. He answered that there was a problem- that my tyres were touching the parking line. I thanked him for his concern, but told him that it wasn't really of his concern. He told me he was the owner, so that it concerned him. I then went on to receive a torrent of abuse from the owner (embarrassingly, in front of many people on the street) whose behaviour was very rude and and extremely abrasive. I was shocked by this because I was going to go there for something to eat as I'd eaten there before with colleagues in the past.
I informed him that I all I wanted to do was to take my daughter for a walk in peace. He quickly changed his tune and asked me why I hadn't told him this before. I still don't understand what he meant by this, as I'm not sure how this would have changed his behaviour. He then angrily said 'JUST MOVE YOUR CAR'. I was so upset and shaken that I quickly got into my car and was going to go straight home. I decided that this man wouldn't be ruining my daughter's day out, so I continued to park two spaces down, without any more abuse. Needless to say I decided against eating at the Bank Note. Thankfully, my faith was restored when I was given the warmest welcome to a neighbouring eatery, even before I'd got through the door, so our day wasn't completely ruined.
I work in Matlock and will NOT be recommending this place, especially to anyone with children. He will not be seeing any of our bank notes,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe stopped by for an early lunch. At first we were a little hesitant as there weren't that many customers but after my son went in to chat with the owner, the first thing he said was that the owner seemed friendly so we went in. We're really glad we did as not only was the food good but the service was fantastic. We got to chatting with the owner, Paul, and he was really warm. We got to talking about the show Peaky Blinders and I wasn't that familiar with it. Paul disappeared and then came back with a Flat Cap as a gift for me to remember him by. I mean, who does that for their patrons? To top it off, my son accidentally spilled his (almost finished) coffee and not only did Paul come by to clean it up (he kept telling my son not to worry about it as accidents happen), he then showed up with a brand new cup of coffee and insisted that it was on the house. I've not experienced such hospitality in any of my travels around the world so I'm really surprised by the negative comments on service here. Someone made a comment here that the owner may be biased towards certain ethnicities and being Asian, we felt no biasness. In fact he joked about how it was international day at his shop with us Asians and the other table being from New Zealand. It's a nice family run place so if diners are fair/friendly, I'm sure Paul and family/staff would reciprocate. We highly recommend this place and will be stopping by the Bank Note Cafe when we visit...
Read moreStayed here good Friday and Saturday night. And was really happy with overall experience. We dont often stay in b&b. Usually larger hotels. But i was pleased with our choice. We found Paul the manager very welcoming and friendly. At all times. And to all he served. I enjoyed the veggie breakfasts (included in the cost of £75.) For 2 people. And we also decided to eat there in the evening, and was given a nice variety of vegetarian options. Which was at a good price. And prepared in good timing. Portions again a good size.|The pub has good choice. And Paul offered good advice regarding surrounding area when we enquired.|Our room was £75 pernight including breakfast. And we shared a bathroom. Which was fine..it didnt cause an issue.|I slept well. As the bed was comfy. And room dark. Although traffic outside on the main road is to be expected. I wouldn't have expected silence. As the location is bang in the heart of Matlock. Which is perfect. Will...
